SMU (19-5, 8-3 American Athletic Conference) has already beaten three Top 25 opponents in seven games since moving into the renovated Moody Coliseum on campus five weeks ago. TORONTO -- At the world figure skating championships last spring, Piper Gilles wore a bejewelled Canadian flag that shed crafted herself on the right shoulder of her bodysuit. She wasnt a Canadian yet, but had fingers crossed her citizenship would come through in time to compete at the Sochi Olympics with ice dance partner Paul Poirier. Her dream was realized Tuesday at a citizenship ceremony in Toronto. "I have felt like a Canadian citizen for some time and I am extremely excited that it is now official," Gilles said in a release. "Ive dreamed about competing in the Olympics my whole life and hope to be in Sochi next year. There is no bigger stage than the Olympics and it would be an honour to represent Canada in front of the entire world." Gilles, whose mom Bonnie is a dual citizen of Canada and the U.S., was born in Illinois and moved to Canada in 2011 to train with Poirier, a native of Unionville, Ont. SOCHI, Russia - The external noise that comes with being the starting goaltender for Team Canada at the Olympics isnt all that unfamiliar to Carey Price, who is immersed in a regular pressure-cooker back home in Montreal. "I live inside a bubble anyway," said Price, who will start in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. "I dont get into too much about what anybody has to say really. Im just out there just trying to do my job like everybody else." If not tested much yet, the stoic Price has nonetheless done his job thus far, but its now under the scope of elimination that pressure really picks up on the 26-year-old. Having been through the daily ringer with the Canadiens, however, he may be just the guy to withstand the heat. "[Price] has that personality," said Jonathan Toews, "that he can just keep things even-keel even if half the city of Montreal wants to come have a word with him on his doorstep. But I think thats what makes him the type of goalie that we really trust in our locker room at this tournament." Toews got a firsthand look at how Price, a Vancouver native, stays cool under fire seven years ago. Teammates during the 2007 World Junior Championships, Toews saw Price stoned any and all competition en route to gold in Sweden, earning tournament MVP with a 1.14 goals against average. It was then that the future Chicago Blackhawks captain foresaw star potential and a personality that seemed unshakeable. "I dont think anything I knew about him then has changed now," said the 25-year-old Toews. "I think hes still the same relaxed guy that handles those sort of pressure situations pretty well." Duncan Keith recalled Prices comments in the fall of 2010 when he told fans in Montreal to "relax" after they booed him during a preseason game at the Bell Centre. "He told the fans to chill out and now I kind of see how hes like," said Keith of Prices tempered state of being. "When you have a goaltender thats relaxed and calm I think that can run through the rest of the guys when they see that. I think thats a good thing. Its a calming influence and in these type of games where theres a lot of pressure and a lot at stake you want to be composed and not panic." Price has yet to face that level of pressure in these Olympics and it remains to be seen how exactly hell manage under the highest levels of duress. Even the great Martin Brodeur slipped up on the Olympic stage, most recently in 2010 when he lost the starting job to Roberto Luongo following a poor performance against the Americans in the preliminary round. Price wasnt tested much during Canadas final preliminary round game versus Finland this time around - just 15 shots with stiff defensive backing in his second start - but he did manage a key save or two along the way. Most notable among them was a blocker stop on Petri Kontiola with the score even at one in a tense third period. "Just trying to stay alert, pay attention to details because in tight-scoring games thats what it comes down to is making sure that youre aware of any type of situation that may appear," said Price, emotions at an unrelenting equal equilibrium. Insulated in many ways from any hint of Canadian pressure on the other side of the globe, Price believes his experience in Montreal will nonetheless be beneficial with the weight (and pride of course) of the red Maple Leaf on his chest. "One day things are great and the next day things arent so good if they dont play a solid game," said Toews. CLEVELAND -- Michael Brantley did just about everything for the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night. The first-time All-Star homered and had three RBIs and Nick Swisher hit a go-ahead two-run shot in the sixth, leading Cleveland to a 5-3 victory over Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees. The Indians stopped Tanakas bid to become the major leagues first 13-game winner. The rookie All-Star right-hander (12-4) allowed season worsts of five runs and 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings. But the night belonged to Brantley, who hit a leadoff homer in the seventh and had RBI doubles in the first and fifth, raising his average to .328. He also ran down Derek Jeters fly ball to deep centre on the warning track in the first when New York scored twice. "Hes a pretty good player, and hes getting better," Indians manager Terry Francona said with a smile. Brantley has 14 homers and 60 RBIs, both team highs. He also is tied for the AL lead with 10 outfield assists. "Hes a young player thats really developed into one of the better outfielders in the game all-around," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Sometimes the team will be at the airport and a flight to their city leaves and they are still booked on a later flight. Coaches are always trying to steal time whenever possible to get ahead because the work week is daunting. The technology has improved dramatically because the video department can get the coaches the game film on their laptop or their Ipad. Just five years ago you wouldve had to wait until you got home to see the game. They will try to have it finished by the time they get home. 2013 CFL Coach of the Year Corey Chamblin was sitting by himself right in front of the gate collecting his thoughts. As a former CFL head coach I can tell you after a loss you are thinking about everything that went wrong and how you can fix it.
