ST. LOUIS - Matt Adams hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series with the NL Central rival they topped in the division series last fall. Matt Carpenter walked to lead off the ninth and Matt Holliday flied out. Adams then hit his 10th homer on an 0-1 pitch from Justin Wilson (2-1) for his first career game-winning homer. It was the Cardinals first game-winning homer since Skip Schumaker connected against the Kansas City Royals on June 19, 2011. Charlie Morton allowed one hit in seven innings for Pittsburgh, which stranded 12 runners. Adam Wainwright, the Cardinals 11-game winner, scattered seven hits in seven scoreless innings. Pat Neshek (3-0) worked a perfect ninth against the top of the order for St. Louis. Discount Nike Air Max Wholesale . MINNEAPOLIS -- After another strong start by Dallas Keuchel and an impressive home run from George Springer, it was Dexter Fowler who saved the game for the Houston Astros with a diving catch. Keuchel didnt allow a run over six innings, Springer hit his 11th home run and the Astros held on to beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Friday night. The Twins could have tied the game in the eighth inning if not for Fowlers spectacular, diving grab that robbed Trevor Plouffe of a leadoff extra-base hit. "That play by Dexter Fowler may have been the play of the game," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "Thats a leadoff double, if not a triple, if he ends up diving and not getting the ball." Marwin Gonzalez and Matt Dominguez also homered off Phil Hughes (6-2), who lost for the first time in nine starts. The Astros have won six straight road games and 10 of their last 13 overall. Danny Santana hit his first career home run, a two-run shot in the seventh inning off reliever Tony Sipp as the Twins tried to rally late. After the start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 21 minutes by a storm that never arrived, Keuchel (7-3) struck out six and won for the fifth time in his last six starts. Springer drove a pitch from Hughes that was down and away and off the plate an estimated 402 feet to the opposite field in the sixth to give Houston a 5-0 lead. "That there is what you call power to all fields," Porter said with a big smile on his face. It was Springers first homer in June after he hit 10 in May and was selected the American League rookie of the month. Since May 11, Houston is 16-9 and on track to avoid 100-plus losses for the first time since 2010. Gonzalez pulled back on a drag bunt attempt in the third, then lined the next pitch over the wall in right field to give the Astros a 1-0 lead. Dominguez drove a high fastball from Hughes to straightaway centre in the fourth, hitting it just far enough to get it over the glove of a leaping Aaron Hicks. It was the first time Hughes allowed multiple homers since his first start of the season on April 3. Coming into the game, Hughes had allowed only four home runs all season and just one in his last 48 innings. "Just the mistakes over the plate really," Hughes said. "I didnt have my best fastball tonight and just wasnt making adjustments the way I had before." Chad Qualls pitched around a two-out throwing error by Dominguez in the ninth to earn his seventh save in eight chances. Eduardo Escobar had three hits including an RBI double that made it 5-4 with two outs in the eighth. Escobars double would have tied the game if Fowler didnt sprint over to the left-centre gap and rob Plouffe, sliding a long way on the grass after securing the catch. "When it was hit, I was like, I got to go a long way for that," Fowler said. "So I just put my head down and ran and I picked it up. The only way I could catch it was if I dive for it." Oswaldo Arcia, who homered in his previous two games but didnt start because of a sprained ankle, pinch-hit and flied out on the first pitch from lefty Darin Downs. But it was the Astros defence, including a diving play for the first out in the ninth by second baseman Jose Altuve that saved this one. "They made play after play," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We hit some balls pretty good and they kept making diving plays all over the place, which actually saved the ballgame for them because we put some decent swings out there and had plenty of chances." About 10 minutes before the first pitch, the Target Field grounds crew rolled out the infield tarp in anticipation of a storm that was approaching the area. It never rained during the delay, but light rain did fall in the early innings. His grandson, Austin Dillon, won the Nationwide Series title in the famed No. 3 and by three points. "Hard to believe," Childress said. "I couldnt be more proud of Austin. He drives with his heart every lap. What can you say? Hes just a great competitor, a great grandson. Im proud, really proud of him. He ran good and hard tonight." Sprint Cup regular Brad Keselowski won the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday, moving up 10 spots in the closing few laps to give an otherwise typical race a wild and wacky finish. But the night belonged to Dillon, who overcame a sluggish start and a scrape against the wall to finish 12th. It was good enough to hold off Sam Hornish Jr. by three points. Hornish crossed the line eighth. "It was ugly," said Dillon, who won the Truck Series title in 2011. "Probably the worst car we had all year. But we fought. My guys kept me positive in the car." Hornish looked as if he would overcome an eight-point deficit in the standings for much of the 200-lap race, but a lengthy caution late posed problems. NASCAR slowed the race for 12 laps -- tied for the longest caution of the year -- and it turned out to be a setback for Hornish. He dropped from third to ninth on the final restart with five laps to go, ending his chances at getting a title in what was his final race for Penske Racing. "I felt very sorry for Sam," Penske said. "And I have to say Ive never seen a race that was so important give away 15 or 16 laps before you have five laps to go. To me, that is very disappointing from the standpoint of the fans and (us) as competitors. When I think about it, it could have gone either way." NASCAR defended its decision to keep the race under caution. "When youre in situations like that, the most important thing is getting the track race ready," said Robin Pemberton, NASCARs vice-president of competition. "You know, you can look at, you can use your hindsight every chance that you want to, but in this particular time, we did the best we could to do, and it was more important to get the track ready." Keselowski got new tires during the final caution and used them to weave his way through traffic. He went from 11th to first in a two-lap span after the restart. And once hee was out front, no one was catching him.dddddddddddd Certainly not Dillon and Hornish, who were stuck on old tires because they had used their allotment. "I dont even remember what happened," Keselowski said. "We were going to win the race or I was going to bring back the steering wheel. With five laps to go, thats the only attitude that can win the race. Sometimes you make it through, sometimes you dont. Today we did. A lot of aggressive moves. "It almost felt like a video game passing 10 or 12 cars in two or three laps. Thats what youve got to be able to do to win at this level." Keselowski finished the season with seven victories, all in the last 10 of his 16 series starts. Rookie Kyle Larson finished second, followed Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Trevor Bayne. Hornish and Dillon had nothing for the leaders down the stretch. Having worn tires made passing difficult, if not impossible, in the final few laps. It didnt help Hornish that Kyle Busch spun his tires on the restart. "Couldnt get far enough ahead of those guys who had taken four tires," Hornish said. "Thats how it worked out for us tonight. We gave away points throughout the season, between the driver making mistakes, from everybody on this team making the car better. We win as a team, we lose as a team. Just needed a little bit more." Keselowskis victory wasnt the only thing to celebrate for Penske Racing. The team won the owners title for Roger Penske -- edging Joe Gibbs Racing by a point -- and landed Ford the manufacturers championship. Joey Logano finished sixth in the title-winning No. 22 car. "We had four goals coming in here: win the manufacturer championship for Ford, help Sam win the driver title, win the owners title and then win the race. We got three out of the four," Keselowski said. "Sam did a great job, even though he didnt get the fourth one done. He did an awesome job, and Im really proud of his effort." But the biggest celebration was saved for Dillon, whose fondest memory as a kid was seeing late NASCAR great Dale Earnhardt win the 1998 Daytona 500. Dillon knew all he had to do was stay close to Hornish. "I knew if I could see him and see where he was, then I wasnt going to give up all the way to end," Dillon said. "He was a great competitor. Sam, he brought his stuff tonight. We were able to pass one at the end, and it was a hell of a race." ' ' '

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Royals extended a $15.3 million qualifying offer to right-hander James Shields, which assures Kansas City of draft pick compensation if its staff ace signs a major league contract with another team before June 8.Shields has until Nov. 10 to accept, and it is expected he will not. In the past two years, none of the 22 free agents given qualifying offers have accepted. The Royals also exercised a $7 million option for next season on reliever Wade Davis and selected the contract of outfielder Paulo Orlando from Triple-A during a busy Monday.Over the weekend, the Royals elected to pay designated hitter Billy Butler a $1 million buyout rather than exercise their $12.5 million option. The decision was widely expected, and Butler said he hopes hell be able to agree with the Royals on a new contract. Its unlikely the Royals will be able to do the same with Shields, who helped them win the AL pennant after reaching the playoffs for the first time in 29 years. With higher-payroll clubs in the market for pitching, Shields is expected to sign elsewhere. If that happens, the Royals would receive a compensatory draft pick between the first and second rounds of next years amateur draft by extending to him a qualifying offer.General manager Dayton Moore said recently he expects the Royals to be in the market for pitching, too. But it will likely be a starter carrying a much smaller price tag, similar to deals signed by right-hander Jeremy Guthrie and left-hander Jason Vargas in recent years. Were going to have to make some tough decisions with our roster, and you know well continue to look to add players that fit in, Moore said, but were going to have to certainly look to add starting pitching. Well continue to try to put it together the way we have.Shields, who arrived along with Davis in a December 2012 trade, went 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA in his first season in Kansas City. He was 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA this year, logging more than 200 innings for the seventh time in eight years.Perhaps the heavy workload took its toll in the playoffs. Shields was battered by Oakland in the AL wild-card game, which Kansas City rallied to win in 12 innings. He fared better against the Angels in the division series, but was pounded again by Baltimore in the AL Championship Series — though the Royals once again picked up him during their four-game sweep. In two World Series starts against the San Francisco Giants, Shields went 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA. He only lasted nine innings over the two outings, outdueled each time by Madison Bumgarner.Im not too worried about my free agency right now, Shields said after the Royals lost Game 7 last week. Obviously I have to think about that and well see what happens.Davis earned his option — a significant raise from the $4.8 million he made this season — by having one of the best seasons by a relief pitcher in major league history. The hard-throwing right-hander, a middling starter, went 9-2 with a 1.00 ERA in a team-high 71 appearances. His ERA led all big league relievers and was the eighth-best ever by an AL relief pitcher. He mostly handled the eighth inning ahead of Greg Holland, but also recorded three saves while filling in as the closer late in the season.Kansas City also has an $8 million option for next season with a $500,000 buyout. If the Royals exercise it, they would have a $10 million option for 2017 with a $250,000 buyout.By exercising their option on Davis, the Royals will bring back the dominant back of their bullpen intact, though Holland and seventh-inning star Kelvin Herrera could both get hefty raises through arbitration after stellar seasons.Holland, an All-Star the past two seasons, had a 1.44 ERA with 46 saves in 65 appearances this season. He saved two games against the Angels in the ALDS and joined Dennis Eckersley as the only pitchers to save all four games in an ALCS against the Orioles.Herrera was 4-3 with a career-best 1.41 ERA in 70 appearances this season. Weiss addressed the issue in a 15-minute meeting with his pitcher and catcher after the Rockies gave up 14 hits and lost 10-1. LAS VEGAS -- Frustrated in his big fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Canelo Alvarez found a much easier target in Alfredo Angulo. Alvarez battered a game but outclassed Angulo on Saturday night before stopping him with an uppercut that prompted referee Tony Weeks to move in at 47 seconds of the 10th round of their junior middleweight fight. Alvarez (43-1-1) never was able to put down Angulo (22-4), but hit him throughout the fight with hard combinations that almost always found their mark. By the middle rounds, the only suspense left was whether Angulo could go the distance. The fight was in marked contrast to the last bout for Alvarez, who was dominated by Mayweather in the richest bout ever. But while Mayweather was the master of defence, Angulo was there to be hit all night long -- and Alvarez did just that. "Tonight, I was the best fighter and definitely rebounded from the Mayweather fight with my performance," Alvarez said. Angulo, who was never close to going down, protested when Weeks moved in to stop the fight after a big left uppercut to the head. Before the 10th round began, Angulos corner had pleaded with the ring doctor to give their fighter one more round to try and turn things around. "Im upset because they should have let the fight go on," Angulo said. "Im fine and I was fighting." Angulo never stopped going forward, but he paid a price, taking shot after shot to the head as Alvarez teed off seemingly at will. Alvarez won all but one of the first nine rounds on two ringside scorecards, and two on the third. The Associated Press had him winning eight of the first nine rounds. Ringside punching stats were just as lopsided, with Alvarez landing 295 punches to 104 for Angulo. The ending was booed by many in the crowd that filled the MGM Grand arena for the junior middleweight showdown between the two Mexican fighters. There was no title at stake, but the 23-year-old Alvarez seemed determined to win big to erase memories of the loss to Mayweather, the only one of his career. He landed the first left hook he threw seconds into the fight and it wwas quickly apparent that Angulo would have no answer for his speed and power.dddddddddddd "He wanted to please the fans because he felt in the Mayweather fight he let a lot of people down," promoter Richard Schaefer said. "Canelo was not satisfied with just the win. He came to make a statement and you saw that." Alvarez was already a big star when he met Mayweather in September, but the red-haired fan favourite was frustrated by Mayweathers defence and lost almost every round. He said before this fight that he learned a lot against Mayweather, and vowed to show it in his comeback fight. The only time Angulo even seemed to be in the fight was in the eighth round when he landed some good punches to the head and kept advancing. But Alvarez came back to dominate the ninth round, prompting the ring doctor to look at Angulo between rounds to see whether he could continue. "I was so secure in my jab and my stamina was there," Alvarez said. "Of course I was a little tired, its boxing. But I was ready to finish the fight and even go 10 more rounds." Alvarez was guaranteed $1.15 million to $850,000 for Angulo. The purses were adjusted when Alvarez agreed to pay $100,000 to Angulo on Friday to raise the weight limit to 155 pounds from 154 because he couldnt make the original weight. Before the main event, Alvarez watched from his dressing room as his brother, Ricardo Alvarez, was knocked down twice on the way to a decision loss to Sergio Thompson in a 135-pound fight. Thompson was the harder hitting fighter from the opening bell, winning easily on one scorecard and narrowly on the other two in taking the 10-round decision. In another undercard fight, Leo Santa Cruz remained unbeaten in defending his 122-pound title with a lopsided decision win over Cristian Mijares of Mexico. Santa Cruz, who lives in Los Angeles, shook off a cut near his right eye from a head butt in the fourth round to win every round on two ringside scorecards and all but one round on the third in improving to 27-0-1. Mijares, a former 115-pound champion, fell to 48-8-2. ' ' '

SAN ANTONIO -- Although the San Antonio Spurs seem rather methodical and downright boring to some, they are enjoying themselves this season and that is ruining the fun for others. Tony Parker scored 19 points before sitting out the fourth quarter and the Spurs beat the Boston Celtics 104-93 Wednesday night, winning their eighth straight overall and remaining undefeated at home. San Antonio had 27 assists and six players score in double figures, rallying from a lethargic start to lead by as many as 19 points in the second half. "Those moments when we start to play better D, push the ball and be more aggressive, then its fun to watch, its exciting and thats what we need," San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili said. "We are not exciting in a way that were going to have alley-oops and windmills (dunking) and stuff like that, but we pass the ball really well. We penetrate and pitch, and everybody gets involved and thats fun." Kawhi Leonard had 16 points and Tim Duncan rebounded from a poor outing in San Antonios previous home game to score 13 points. Boris Diaw had 12 points, Tiago Splitter added 11 points and 10 rebounds and Danny Green 11 points for the Spurs (10-1). San Antonio shot 48 per cent from the field and was 8 for 21 on 3-pointers as Boston struggled to close on the Spurs shooters. "Phew," Celtics forward Jared Sullinger said, exhaling when asked about the Spurs ball movement. "Theyre a tough team to play. On any given night, anybody can go off. Honestly, they move the ball. They care less about scoring; they play together as a team. "They have go-to players but they hardly ever use them because they move the ball so well and they play as a team, so theyre hard to guard. Sullinger, Avery Bradley and Jeff Green each had 19 points for Boston (4-9), which has lost five straight. There were 10 lead changes and 14 ties in the first half, as neither team was able to sustain any momentum. While the Spurs werent happy with the early efforts, first-year coach Brad Stevens was pleased with the Celtics forging a 48-all tie at the half. "The team that played tonight could be a really fun group to build with," Stevens said. "I think thats what you take from here. We talked about this early in the year. Theres going to be nights where we measure progress a little bit differently." That progress was stunted in the second half, as San Antonio was able to pull away midway through the third quarter behind strong individual efforts by Leonard, Parker and Ginobili. Leonard keyed the resurgence, scoring 10 of 12 points, including a 3-pointer that put San Antonio ahead 61-52 with 8 minutes left in the quarter. "He can do that kind of thing," Diaw said. "He is really talented and he proved that already last year. This year is no different. Sometimes, when he gets it going, it is going to be very hard to stop (him)." Leonard had 12 points, five rebounds and two steals in the third quarter, as San Antonio outscored Boston 32-22. "Im still having fun; thats why Im still playing," Leonard said. "Were winning, you cant have more fun than that, when youre winning and on a good team." Parker made two dazzling layups, first presenting the ball with his right hand to draw a defender out of the lane and spinning back for a layup between defenders and then spinning away from a defender in the lane for a layup on the right side of the basket. Ginobili literally wrapped a pass around a defender, tossing behind around a charging Brandon Bass to find Diaw cutting to the basket for a layup. Ginobili finished with five points and six assists. After scoring only two points in the Spurs previous home game against Washington, Duncan made the games first two baskets as the team targeted him early. He finished 3 for 13, but was 7 for 8 on free throws while also grabbing nine rebounds. NOTES: San Antonio is tied with Indiana for the leagues best record, but its victories have come against teams with a combined winning percentage of .408 entering Wednesdays games. Only two the Spurs wins have come against teams above .500. Their only loss was against Portland, which is 10-2 after defeating Milwaukee. ... Bostons Keith Bogans was not with the team due to an undisclosed illness. ... San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich was issued a technical foul with 4 minutes left in the game after haranguing referee David Guthrie continually for a lack of calls. Popovich smiled, appearing amused by the technical. ... The Big Three of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili have played 629 games together, which is the most amongst active teammates and fifth all-time. The trio surpassed Derek Harper, Brad Davis and Rolando Blackman of the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday and trail the leading trio of Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale and Larry Bird by 100 games played together. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Retiring his "The Executioner" nickname in favour of the "The Alien," Bernard Hopkins tried to give Karo Murat a close encounter of the knockout kind. With his first KO in almost a decade within reach, the 48-year-old Hopkins turned his title defence with Murat into a brawl, and retained his share of the light heavyweight championship with a unanimous decision Saturday night. Hopkins walked to the ring in a green mask with black eyes, and a cape, attire straight out of a campy sci fi flick. He had the "The Alien" emblazoned on the green waistband of his black trunks. "The alien dont get old," Hopkins said. Hopkins (54-6-2) was dominant in his most convincing -- and entertaining -- bout in at least a decade. He turned the later rounds into his own personal mission to score his first knockout win since beating Oscar De La Hoya in September 2004 -- 15 fights ago. He battered Murat and busted open the challenger with a series of rights to the face to help successfully defend his championship at Boardwalk Hall. Hopkins won 119-108, 119-108, 117-110. "I really wanted the knockout, but he was tough," Hopkins said. "You know youve got to take some punches. Yeah, I have a little bit of blood on me but this is what they want to see. They wanted to see the knockout, so I took some shots." Already the oldest fighter to win a major championship, Hopkins wants to keep fighting until hes 50. Up next, hed like a date with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the spring -- when Hopkins would be 49. "Were going to do everything we can to get the biggest possible fight," Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said. The Philadelphia fighter also had the crowd on his side, with chants of "B-Hop! B-Hop!" echoing through the arena with each right hand in the late rounds. He also heard encouragement from undefeated Philly fighter Danny Garcia, groomed as the next big star, who screamed "throw that right hand into the body! All day, every day!" from press row. Hopkins, who weighed in at 172 1/2 pounds, pretty much did that as he pounded away at Murat. He smiled and shook his head no after absorbing some blows in the third round. Hopkins kissed Murat on the back of his head coming out of a clinch in the fifth. He also taunted Murats corner late in the fight, barking at them to stop the fight. "Im just glad he brought the dog out of me," Hopkins said. "I saw this guy was all cut up and Im just going to keep beating him. They didnt listen." Hopkins finally busted open Murat in eighth, with cuts above the left eye and the cheek. The blood didnt appear to seriously affect Murat. But Murat (25-2-1) didnt do himself any favours with a series of questionable blows. Hopkins fell in the sixth round and sat on his rear as Murat hit him twice in the face. He didnt lose a point. He did lose one in the seventh round for hitting after the break. Referee Steve Smoger shoved Murat in the face after another hit after the bell to end the 12th. Murat, born and raised in Iraq before moving to Germany, came out swinging and attacked Hopkins from the opening round. Hopkins built a successful career with a methodical style of doing just enough in the ring to win. But he answered Murat and they spent most of the bout exchanging big punches. "He figured if he roughed me up, hed get some sort of advantage," Hopkins said. "It didnt bother me." In the co-main event, Peter Quillin retained the WBO middleweight title with a 10th-round TKO over Gabriel Rosado. Rosado was busted open above the left eye and could not stop bleeding, forcing the ringside doctor to call for the stoppage. Rosado was irate and yelled profanities from the top rope. "They knew he was getting hurt and they stopped it," Rosado said. "I was hurting him in the later rounds. I deserve a rematch." Quillin, one of the best knockdown fighters in the sport, sent Rosado to the canvas in the second and was ahead on the three scorecards when the bout was stopped 40 seconds into the 10th. John Henson contributed a double-double with 15 points to go with 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels (25-4, 12-2 ACC), who have won five straight and 10 of 11.Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Sanchez threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score as the Philadelphia Eagles seized sole possession of first place in the NFC East with a 33-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Sanchez had 217 yards on 20-of-29 passing, and LeSean McCoy posted 159 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries for the Eagles (9-3), who raced out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back on their way to improving to 6-0 on Thanksgiving. The only thing preventing the score from being even more lopsided was Philadelphias inefficiency in the red zone. The Eagles scored a touchdown only once and settled for four Cody Parkey field goals in five trips, but it didnt come back to haunt them because of a strong defensive effort. The Eagles ended Tony Romos consecutive games streak with a touchdown pass at 38 and held league rushing leader DeMarco Murray to under 100 yards. Romo completed 18-of-29 passes for 199 yards and threw two interceptions as Dallas (8-4) dropped its third straight home game. Today was an opportunity that we didnt cash in on, but we have to learn from this game and move forward, said Dallas head coach Jason Garrett. Murray failed to reach the century mark for only the second time in 2014. He finished with a season-low 73 yards on 20 carries against the Eagles. The teams will meet again at Philadelphia on Dec. 14. The Eagles started quickly as back-to-back runs of 13 yards by Darren Sproles and 36 yards by McCoy placed the ball at Dallas 22. Sanchez capped the games opening drive by scoring on an option keeper from the 2. After a Dallas punt, Sanchez picked apart the Cowboys secondary, completing 5- of-6 passes on an 88-yard drive that endeed with a 27-yard touchdown grab by rookie wide receiver Jordan Matthews.dddddddddddd Our guys came ready to play. They played with great energy, said Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. The Cowboys responded as Dez Bryants 38-yard catch along the right sideline set up Murrays 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter. Philadelphia got another big play the next time on offense. Sanchez found an uncovered Jeremy Maclin, who cut across the field to the Dallas 20 on a 58- yard catch-and-run. Sanchez had fumbled on the previous play, but offensive lineman Andrew Gardner alertly pounced on the ball. Parkey nailed a 31-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 17-7 with 12:10 left in the first half. Parkey added two more field goals inside the final two minutes to put Philadelphia up 23-7 at halftime. The rookie made a 22-yarder and then hit a 26-yarder following a fumble by Dallas wideout Cole Beasley. McCoy fumbled on the Eagles first drive of the second half, leading to a 28-yard Dan Bailey field goal, but he atoned for the turnover with a 38-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter. Parkey made a 25-yarder in the fourth quarter. Game Notes The Eagles won the only previous meeting between the teams on Thanksgiving by a 27-0 score on Nov. 23, 1989 ... The Cowboys fell to 29-17-1 all-time on the holiday ... Maclin had 108 yards on eight receptions and posted his first career 1,000-yard receiving season ... McCoy eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing for the fourth time in five seasons ... Bryant caught four passes for 73 yards ... The Eagles converted 8-of-15 third downs and outgained the Cowboys by a 464-267 margin. ' ' '

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The San Jose Sharks had been trying to get Joe Pavelski to 40 goals for three games, looking for him at every chance, sending extra passes his way. Pavelski got No. 40 out of the way quickly against Phoenix and the Sharks got through a difficult game for a nice post-season tune-up to boot. Pavelski had two goals to become the fourth player in team history with 40 goals in a season and San Jose closed out the regular season with a 3-2 win over the Coyotes on Saturday night. "It was nice it comes right away in the game," Pavelski said of goal No. 40. "I could feel everyone try to pass to me, so its cool, but the win obviously is nice going into the playoffs. Guys feel good about themselves." The Sharks wrapped up a playoff spot more than three weeks ago and already had their first-round matchup set up, so there wasnt much to gain against the playing-out-the-string Coyotes. Pavelski knocked out his milestone on a power play 3:43 into the game and added No. 41 midway through to join Owen Nolan, Jonathan Cheechoo and Patrick Marleau in San Joses 40-goal club. The rest of the game was ugly at times, filled with turnovers and mistakes, but the Sharks found a way to grind out a victory before getting a rematch against the Los Angeles Kings in the playoffs. Logan Couture scored, Dan Boyle had a pair of assists and Antti Niemi stopped 30 shots, including Shane Doan on a breakaway late in the third period for San Jose. "This one was a tough to watch and be part of, the turnovers, the casualness, it was kind of a no-hitter from both teams, which benefited us, obviously, to stay healthy," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "Im glad this ones over and we can focus on playing playoff hockey." The Coyotes have limped to the end of the season and are ready for it to just end after being knocking out of playoff contention Friday night. Goalie Mark Visentin gave up two goals in the opening 10 minutes of his NHL debut before settling down, stopping 29 shots. Phoenix generated some good scoring chances, yet couldnt capitalize on most of them, stretching their losing streak to seven games. Mike Ribeiro and Doan scored for the Coyotes, who have not won since March 27. "We want to beat everybody and just end this stupid streak," Doan said. The Sharks locked up their playoff spot on March 24 and already know theyll face the Kings in the opening round, so the finale was little more than a tuneup. The Coyotes had been hoping this would be the deciding weekend for their post-season hopes. They never got to it. Despite Dallas inability to run away with the Wests final playoff spot, Phoenix couldnt make up ground, losing six straight games until the Stars wrapped up their place in the post-season by beating Colorado on Friday night. With nothing but pride left to play for and Mike Smith sidelined for the ninth straight game, the Coyotes decided to give Visentin his shot at the big time. The 27th overall pick of the 2010 NHL draft, he went 14-19-5 with a 3.30 goals-against average in 44 games with Portland of the AHL. His NHL debut did not go well early. Visentin was caught out of position on a power play early in the first period and Pavelski whipped a wrister past him on a short rush. Pavelski beat him again midway through the period, squeezing a shot from the short side past his stick side. Visentin settled his nerves after that, making some tough saves in traffic. Couture scored 38 seconds into the third period, but needed a nifty, between-the-legs-redirect after a turnover by Phoenixs Kyle Chipchura to beat him. "They werent the greatest of goals, but at the end of the day you just have to put it behind you," Visentin said. "The biggest thing was basically resetting between periods and coming out with a fresh mindset." Ribeiro scored midway through the second period, taking a pass from Radim Vrbata, waiting until Niemi committed, then flipping a shot that went off the inside of the goalies glove arm into the net. Coutures goal put San Jose up 3-1, but Doan cut the lead back to one quickly, beating Niemi on a one-timer from the right faceoff dot 44 seconds later. That was it for the Coyotes, though, leaving them with one more chance to end their losing streak while sending the Sharks into the playoffs with an extra dose of confidence. NOTES: The Coyotes close out the regular season against Dallas at home on Sunday. ... Sharks D Scott Hannan did not make the trip to Arizona after taking a hard hit from Colorados Patrick Bordeleau on Friday night. ... RW Mike Brown also stayed home with his wife due to deliver their baby. ... Ribeiros goal was his second in 24 games. Cheap Adidas Shoes China . Balenciaga Speed Trainer Discount . “The shootout, theres nothing wrong with it, I think its an exciting part of the game but its just one small aspect,” said Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. “Its a skill exhibition. If you can get it back closer to regular hockey and have it decided that way; that would be my preference.” “I dont think its a knock on the shootout, I think more of the managers would like to see it end in overtime,” added Washington Capitals GM George McPhee. The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals met, the former was on its way to winning four of five while the latter was in the midst of dropping four of five. The outcome of that game was as would be expected. When the teams meet tonight in Toronto, recent form will be entirely flipped, and the club with extended struggles will have a new coach on the bench. Since that 1-3-1 stretch from Nov. 22-Dec. 2, which included a 6-2 loss at Toronto on Nov. 29, the Capitals (20-11-7) have been one of the best team in hockey with a 10-1-3 record making for a furious ascent in the Metropolitan Division. We dont get flustered as much as we did earlier in the year, coach Barry Trotz said. Early in the year our highs were very high and our lows were low ... (now) theres not too many highs or too many lows. We just say Hey, things are going to happen, lets just get the momentum back, lets get the next one, lets go. The Maple Leafs (21-16-3) havent struggled for as long of a time, but theyve clearly had enough after a 2-7-0 span. On Tuesday, it cost coach Randy Carlyle his job. Assistants Peter Horacek and Steve Spott will take over for the time being, and theres been no indication as to which avenue the club will take toward finding a full-time solution. I think wed all agree weve had some good periods, good stretches, but I dont think I can stand here in front of you and say that weve been consistent, general manager Dave Nonis said. We just felt at this point this was the right time to make the change and move ahead and try to get this team back playing like we have played for periods this season. The new coaches will debut before a home crowd after a seven-game road trip that ended with a 5-1 loss Saturday at Winnipeg. Maple Leafs centre Nazem Kadri missed the past two games with a lower-body injury but looks to be in line for a return tonight. He was expected to miss 7-10 days. Stephane Robidas, who sat as a healthy scratch the past four games, appears to be back in the lineup for tonights contestt as well.dddddddddddd Torontos defensive struggles figure to be at the forefront of the new regimes focus, having allowed 3.89 goals per game over the nine-game span with a power-play goal conceded in five straight (70.6 percent). Its been too much of a roller-coaster, Nonis said. Its not that (players are) not capable because they are. Its not that they havent done it because they have. Thats probably the biggest reason, or one of the biggest reasons, for the change today. The Capitals, meanwhile, can match a season-best three-game winning streak after Sundays 4-3 home win over Florida. Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist, splitting a multipoint effort for a third straight game, and he and Nicklas Backstrom had a fresh face on the top line. Rookie Andre Burakovsky skated with the top Capitals forwards for the first time, and he scored his fifth goal of the season for his only point in seven games. He was playing with two big stars and he didnt look intimidated, Trotz said. Braden Holtby has been in goal for the entire 14-game stretch with a 2.05 goals-against average. As a starter against Toronto, hes 2-0-1 with a 0.97 GAA. Jonathan Bernier gets the start in goal for Toronto after James Reimer faced the Jets. Against Washington, Bernier is 3-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA, including a 35-save effort in the November meeting. Mo Farah insists he will prioritise winning medals over breaking a world record ahead of this summers Olympics in Rio. The double Olympic champion kept his preparations for Rio on track by breaking David Moorcrofts 34-year-old British 3,000m record at the Birmingham Diamond League on Sunday. The 33-year-old, who claimed a winning time of seven minutes 32.62 seconds, now holds every major national record from the 1500m to the half-marathon - as well as four indoor national records. Despite winning seven global track titles, his only world best performance is over two miles indoors. Farah broke David Moorcrofts record by a tenth of a second Ethiopias Kenenisa Bekele, who holds the 5,000m and 10,000m world records respectively, claims Farah needs to take one of his world records to be considered an all-time great. But the Briton, who has two wins from two races this summer, is happy racking up the medals. Another double in Brazil in August would see him eclipse Bekeles haul of three Olympic and five world titles.Asked if he had ambitions to attempt a world record, Farah said: Have you seen them? You have to be realistic. Its all one year at a time. This year is all about Rio.Next year is my last track year. I will come out in London (at the World Championships at the Olympic Stadium) and then go on to the road. That is my aim. Records are hard. Adam Gemili is one of GBs leading 100m hopes in Rio Another man with his focus firmly on Rio is Adam Gemili, who was upbeat despite finishing in sixth place in the 100m with a time of 10.29 seconds. The 22-year-old, one of Great Britains leading sprint hopes, was appearing in only his second outdoor meeting since tearing a hamstring while breaking the 10-second barrier for the first time in Birmingham 12 months ago.Sundays performance fell short of the 9.97 the Alexander Stadium crowd witnessed from the former footballer last June, but Gemili said he had learned from that experience. Its not the Olympic final or anything so I dont want to push myself too hard, which is what I did last year and it ended up putting me out for the season, he said.My body is in a great place. These meets are great, but they are not the be-all and end-all. The be-all and end-all is Rio, so thats what Im working towards and hopefully I can go out there and deliver. Washington Nationals Gear .com) - The Eastern Conferences best team takes on one of its worst Tuesday night when the Atlanta Hawks pay a visit to the Wells Fargo Center to take on the Philadelphia 76ers.AKRON, Ohio -- Tiger Woods was stricken with more back pain Sunday and withdrew after eight holes at the Bridgestone Invitational. He struggled to even take off his golf shoes before being driven away to an uncertain future. In his third tournament since returning from back surgery, this had the look of a serious setback. Woods injured himself playing a shot from edge of a bunker on the par-5 second hole. With all weight on his right leg, he took an awkward slash at the ball, fell back toward the sand and landed with a thud, and kept jogging out of the bunker from sheer momentum of the steep drop. "I just jarred it, and its been spasming ever since," Woods told a PGA Tour official before leaving. Woods kept playing, hitting a number of shockingly bad shots. He hit one into the water from the fairway on No. 3, coming up some 30 yards short of the flag. And on the par-3 fifth hole, his tee shot was 65 yards short of the hole. From a bunker left of the seventh green, he blasted out and back into the fairway and made double bogey. He grimaced at impact when he hit a 315-yard drive into the left rough on No. 9. Woods slowly stooped over with his right hand on his leg, reached toward his back and slowly bent down to remove the tee from the ground. Moments later, he stepped into a cart and headed for the parking lot. At his car, Woods could barely switch out of his golf shoes. His caddie, Joe La Cava, drove him away. "Its just the whole lower back," Woods said. "I dont know what happened." Masters champion Bubba Watson said he didnt see Woods hit the shot that hurt him on No. 2, though he could tell as the round went on that something wasnt right. "He hit some shots that were not used to seeing Tiger hit, even when hes coming back from an injury like this," Watson said. "So obviously, something was bothering him. ... Like I told him when I shook his hand, I said, Im praying for you. Hope everything turns out good. Hope to see you next week." With the pain he showed leaving the course -- and just four months removed from back surgery -- it would seem unlikely that Woods plays next week at Valhalla, where he won the PGA Championship in 2000. Woods is scheduled to play the opening two rounds with Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington. Mickelson was on the 11th hole -- not far away from No. 9 -- when he noticed Woods leaving. "It didnt look good. It looked like he was really in pain," Mickelson said. "I hope hes OK. I hope hes able to play next week. I hope its a muscle and nothing serious because Im really looking forward to playing with him. We rarely get paired together. If we do, its been early Saturday. "As much as I love playing with him, playingg against him, trying to beat him, we all want him in the field.dddddddddddd We all want him back. I just hope hes OK." If Woods does not play in the PGA Championship, that would be the end of his season. He would have to win the PGA to be eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs. In six starts on the PGA Tour this year, Woods finished all four rounds only twice. Woods had back surgery March 31 to alleviate an impinged nerve, forcing him to miss the Masters for the first time and the U.S. Open. He returned after three months to Congressional -- three weeks ahead of his own schedule -- and reported no pain in missing the cut by four shots at the Quicken Loans National. He also reported no pain in four rounds at the British Open. He finished 69th, 23 shots out of the lead, his worst 72-hole result in a major. Woods was 3-over par for his round -- and 18 shots off the lead -- when he withdrew at Firestone. He did not say whether he would be able to play the PGA Championship next week -- "Just trying to get out of here," he told the tour official -- though this surely would make it difficult for Tom Watson to consider Woods as a captains pick for the Ryder Cup. The U.S. captain has said for the last few months that he wanted Woods on the team if he was healthy and playing well. Woods was doing neither. Even so, he had not suggested until the shot on the second hole that his back was bothering him. "Hey, this is supposed to be my second tournament back, not my third," Woods said after Fridays round at Firestone. "Everything is going pretty good. Ive gotten a little bit better, and the good news is Im still getting stronger." This was the second time this year Woods had to withdraw in the middle of the final round. At the Honda Classic in March, he stopped after 13 holes. Woods chose to play the next week at Doral, and his back problems showed up Sunday after an awkward stance for a shot out of the bunker. Woods said it was his physical training over the years and his discipline in following doctors orders following microdiscectomy surgery that allowed him to recover quickly. He has gone through four operations on his left knee over the last 20 years, and said the back injury was "way more debilitating than I thought." "Most of the people I talked to who have had the procedure have no idea how Im even back here playing," Woods said at the start of the week. "They just cant understand that. When you have great protocols and you do everything perfectly, everything fell into place. I was able to get back. But now its just continuing, and I still need to get much strong than I am now, and I still need to get much more explosive than I am now. Thats just time." ' ' '

SAN DIEGO -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end David Johnson has signed a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers. Johnson spent the last five seasons with Pittsburgh after being taken in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. He played in 52 games with 26 starts, totalling 22 catches for 216 yards and a touchdown. Air Max Baratas Hombre .com) - The Toronto Maple Leafs will try to play spoiler as the Los Angeles Kings will try to match their longest winning streak in over four years in Thursdays battle at Staples Center.Laurent Duvernay-Tardif made it a record-setting final day of the NFL draft. The McGill Redmen offensive tackle went in the sixth round, 200th overall, to the Kansas City Chiefs, making him the fourth Canadian-born player taken, the most ever. All four were selected Saturday, the final day of the draft. "For sure, its a long time to wait . . . but at the same time I was saying to myself, Theres not much financial advantage to being drafted at that point, its more to get a good fit with a team," Duvernay-Tardif said during a conference call. "When I went to Kansas City I really enjoyed my time there and think I developed a good chemistry with the coaches so I was really happy the Chiefs got me." Montreal Carabins offensive lineman David Foucault, a blue-chip CFL draft prospect, will attend the Carolina Panthers rookie mini-camp next week but hasnt signed with the NFL club. The Baltimore Ravens figured prominently in the record day. They took Virginia defensive lineman Brent Urban, a six-foot-seven, 295-pound native of Mississauga, Ont., in the fourth round, No. 134 overall, before picking Winnipeg native John Urschel, an offensive lineman at Penn State, in the fifth, No. 175 overall. Notre Dame receiver T.J. Jones -- another Winnipeg native -- went in the sixth, No. 189 overall, to the Detroit Lions. Last year, Rice tight end Luke Willson, a native of LaSalle, Ont., was the lone Canadian drafted, going in the fifth round to the Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks. But in 2012, four players from Canada were selected. Three Canadians -- defensive linemen Tyrone Crawford of Windsor, Ont. (third round, Dallas) and Christo Bilukidi of Ottawa (sixth round, Oakland) and centre Philip Blake of Toronto (fourth round, Denver) -- were drafted. So was Akiem Hicks, an American defensive lineman who played at the University of Regina (third round, New Orleans). The six-foot-five, 314-pound Duvernay-Tardif, of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que., is the 10th CIS player taken in the NFL draft but only McGills second. Randy Chevrier, a defensive lineman/long snapper with the CFLs Calgary Stampeders, went in the seventh round to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 01. J.P. Darche, a former Redmen and Toronto Argonauts long-snapper, signed as a free agent with Seattle in 2000 and remained there through the 2006 season before spending his final two campaigns with Kansas City. And like Duvernay-Tardif, Darche was a medical student who juggled his studies with football. Duvernay-Tardif was twice an All-Canadian at McGill and last year was Canadian university footballs top lineman. He also remained firmly entrenched atop the CFL scouting bureaus top-15 prospects list for Tuesday nights draft but will be a definite future selection now. One adjustment Duvernay-Tardif faces in the NFL is having defensive lineman set up across from him instead of a yard off the ball. But he successfully dealt with that in January at the East-West Shrine game. "I think Im physical enough, I think Im athletic enough," he said. "For sure, it (no yard off ball) will be an adjustment but when I went to the Shrine game it took me a practice to get used to it and after that I was ready to go. "Ill be able to work on technique so when training camp starts I think Ill be pretty used to that." Duvernay-Tardif, a converted defensive lineman, saw his draft stock skyrocket following his pro day in Montreal in March. The Chiefs were among nine NFL teams --Oakland, Philadelphia, Arizona, New York Jets, Green Bay, Chicago, San Francisco and Buffalo were the others -- to attend, along with four CFL clubs -- Montreal, Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa. Duvernay-Tardif didnt disappoint, posting a 40-yard dash time of 4.94 seconds, a 31.5-inch vertical and 34 reps in the bench press. Duvernay-Tardif was bypassed for the NFL combine but those numbers were as good aas any offensive lineman who tested in Indianapolis.dddddddddddd After his workout he visited with nine teams, including Kansas City. But it was Urban who came in as the most highly regarded Canadian. Ravens coach John Harbaugh had given Urban a second-round grade before the draft and was surprised to see him still available in the fourth. "Hes a guy when I first watched him thought second round at the latest," Harbaugh told NFL Network. "This guy is a guy who fits our scheme perfectly, a big, strong guy who fell to us so we couldnt be more happy with him." Urban, 23, started eight games last year before suffering a severe high ankle sprain. He still led all NCAA Division 1 defensive linemen with nine pass knockdowns and was invited to the Senior Bowl but couldnt play in the game due to injury. Urban has been compared to Houston Texans star J.J. Watt, one of the NFLs top defensive linemen, and came into the draft projected as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme -- three defensive linemen, four linebackers. "We feel like were getting a potential starter down the road as a five-technique," Ravens director of college scouting Joe Hortiz said on the clubs website. "Hes a guy we really liked throughout the whole process." Urban went in the second round of last years CFL draft to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats but returned to school. This marks the second straight year Hamilton has lost a highly touted defensive lineman to the NFL. The club drafted Calgary Dino Linden Gaydosh first overall in 13 but he signed with Carolina as a free agent and spent all of last season on injured reserve after undergoing back surgery. A converted hockey player, Urban took up football his first year at Lorne Park Secondary School. After high school, he attended Virginia and redshirted as a freshman. He served as a backup defensive end for two seasons before starting at tackle in 2012. Last season, Urban recorded 13 solo tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and a sack. He attended the Senior Bowl but just practised twice because of his ankle injury. Injuries were the major knock against Urban prior to the draft. He suffered a torn ACL in 2010 and played through a wrist ailment in 2011 that required surgery after the season. He had an ankle operation in February and missed the NFL combine but expects to be ready for training camp. "Hes a raw pass rusher," Hortiz said. "The potential is there to give you an inside pass-rush presence." The six-foot-three, 313-pound Urschel was born in Manitoba but played at Canisuis High School in Buffalo, N.Y. He was a captain at Penn State, earned all-Big 10 honours his final two seasons there and was among 15 guards invited to the combine but will likely play centre as a pro. Urschel is more than a football player, having earned a masters degree in math and receiving the Campbell Trophy as U.S. college footballs top scholar. Hes also been published in a scientific journal, prompting the Ravens to ask if football was a priority before drafting him. "I guess I passed with flying colours," he told reporters afterwards. "My intelligence certainly helps. "I feel like I really bring a toughness, a real get-after-it attitude and thats something I take pride in." The six-foot, 195-pound Jones was born in Manitoba but moved to Georgia, where he went to high school. He had his most productive season at Notre Dame in 13 with 70 receptions for 1,108 yards and nine TDs. Jones heads to the NFL with a definite pro pedigree. His late father, Andre, was a defensive end at Notre Dame who also played for the CFLs Winnipeg Blue Bombers. His uncle, Philip Daniels, is a former NFL defensive lineman whos currently Washingtons director of player development. Also, his godfather is former Notre Dame star Raghib (Rocket) Ismail, who helped Toronto win the 91 Grey Cup. ' ' '

TORONTO -- UFC president Dana White says Dominick Cruz needs to be able to return to the cage by early 2014 if he wants to retain his bantamweight title. Cruz (19-1) has not fought since October 2011, sidelined by two knee surgeries. "If he cant fight at the beginning of the year, weve got to pull the trigger," White said Thursday when asked about Cruzs title and the fighters inactivity. "Its been two years. "A lot of people think were crazy for holding up the title this long. But its a tough thing to do, to take a title away from somebody. Its hard to do." The UFC has introduced an interim 135-pound title in Cruzs absence, a belt that Brazils Renan Barao will defend Saturday for the second time. Barao (32-1 with one no contest) is slated to meet Eddie Wineland (20-8-1) in the co-main event of UFC 165 Saturday. The knee injury kept Cruz off the UFC 148 card in July 2012, costing him a lucrative piece of the pay-per-view. Cruz was supposed to meet Urijah (The California Kid) Faber in a meeting of rival coaches from "The Ultimate Fighter." "That kid lost his lottery ticket," White said. "These things happen. Bad things happen like this. Its part of the sport. Theres nothing you can do about it." Should the 28-year-old Cruz lose his title through inactivity, White said the interim champ would take over. "I think we do need to set a standard if somebody cant (fight)," he said. Nike NBA Jerseys . The deal will pay Hainsey $3 million for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons and $2.5 million in 2016-17. COPENHAGEN - They were the two toughest moments in Mathew Dumbas young hockey career. "I really wanted to make this team," a glassy-eyed, 17-year-old Dumba said back in December of 2011 when he was cut by the Canadian national junior team. "It was hard for me to wake up this morning and pack my stuff up. Its emotional, but Ill get through it, but just the experience was great. I had trouble sleeping for sure, I was up every hour and it was just one of those things. Its on your mind constantly. Its tough to go through." One year later he was back in front of the cameras and microphones as one of the final cuts. "I thought I played alright the first two games," an 18-year-old Dumba said then. "I felt I played pretty good the last one. Its tough; its a tough team to make. Im disappointed, but I understand at the same time." A trip to the world junior championship was so close and yet so far. WATCH: Thats Hockey profiles Dumba "Those were my first two times being cut so it was kind of an eye-opener for me, but made me a better player and made me who I am today," said Dumba, who will play a key role on Canadas team this year. "Its tough. Even as a 17-year-old your expectation is to go into camp, play your best and hopefully make the team and thats what I thought I did. Just unfortunate the last two years. Hopefully this years my chance. I have a great opportunity and Im just trying to seize it." "Any time any player goes through that, for two straight years, its always difficult on you and it leaves, maybe, some scars on you," said Brent Sutter, head coach of the Canadian junior squad, who also coached Dumba in Red Deer of the Western Hockey League. MIXED EMOTIONS Dumbas spot on this years Canadian junior team was in jeopardy not because he was on the roster bubble, but because he was in the NHL. The 19-year-old, picked seventh overall by Minnesota in 2012, was struggling to crack the lineup consistently so the Wild loaned him to Hockey Canada. "Even though I felt I should be in the lineup its all based on what the coaches think and what their choices are so as a younger guy Ive just kept with the workouts and the skates and did everything I could to get back in there," said Dumba, who has played 13 games this season, but hasnt suited up since Nov. 23. "Im fortunate enough to have this opportunity and come here and maybe have a lot more minutes than Id have in Minnesota." Dumba is averaging 12:26 of ice time a game with the Wild. "My emotions were a little mixed," he admitted, "you know, you want to be in the NHL and playing every night, but the reality was I wasnt and its awesome to be here and I know Ill have an awesome experience here." "I cant tell you what the conversation was that Minnesota had with Matt when they told him they would assign him to the world junior team," said Sutter, "but Id like to think Matt was pretty excited about that and the fact that now, in his third year, he gets that chance." Dumba insists the feedback from the Wild has been positive. "They really liked my play and thought I was strong as of late. This was purely based on what they thought was best for me and going out and getting that extra experience." The experience in the NHL so far this season has certainly been beneficial to Dumbas evolution. "The consistency day in and day out," said Dumba when asked what has stood out. "They come to practice every day and guys are on their game. You dont really see a guy have a bad game. At most, he has an OK game and he gets better the next game. Its just that consistency. Thats the biggest thing Ive taken away from being a pro." The Regina native has had an opportunity to watch Ryan Suter, the NHLs ice time leader at 29:37 a game, up close. "I think the other night he may have played 35 minutes or something," Dumba said. "I was checking the box score. Its crazy watching those guys and how they play so many minutes at such an elite level. I think its crazy. I got pretty good role models there." And those role models had a message for Dumba as he departed for the world juniors. "All the Canadian guys said, Bring back the gold, but the Americans had a bit of a different conversation with me," Dumba recalled with a chuckle. Canada will wrap up the round robin with a game against the United States on New Years Eve. HE DESERVES IT Its possible Dumba wouldnt be at this point without the influence of Sutter, who twice led the Canadian juniors to gold in 2005 and 2006. "Hes played a huge role, especially last year," said Dumba. "He really pushed me to the limit and made me more reliable, more responsible in my own zone and all over the ice in terms of understanding the game and being an elite player in all areas of the ice." Asked to describe Sutter in one word, Dumba pauses for a few second, laughs, and says, "intense." "I think we both know each other so he knows what I can bring and I know what he expects so I think everything will got smooth." As for Sutter, the no-nonsense taskmaster allows for a moment of sentimentality when talking about how Dumba will finally get a shot at wearing the Maple Leaf at the world juniors after so much heartache. "He deserves it," said Sutter. "Hes been one of the best defencemen not only in the Western Hockey League, but in our country for the last year. Were leaning on him to be a big part of this team." Drouin, from Corunna, Ont., bested his own record of 2.38 metres set in Aug.LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The way goalie Martin Jones began his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings, the last thing anyone on either bench expected was for him to give up goals on the first two shots the Dallas Stars took. But Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn scored 1 minute, 20 seconds apart — before the Staples Center seats were even filled — and rookie linemate Valeri Nichushkin got the go-ahead goal on a power play in the second period to propel the Stars to a 5-2 victory over the Kings on Monday night. "Those guys have played extremely well, and we came in here as weak underdogs. But we got off to a great start," goaltender Kari Lehtonen said. "We talked about how well (Jones) has played. But I tried to turn it around the other way, like: He has to lose one day — and hopefully it would be tonight. But hes a real good goalie and fun to watch." Cody Eakin scored an insurance goal with 4:48 remaining against Jones, who stopped 19 shots in his first NHL loss. Shawn Horcoff was awarded an empty-net goal after he was tripped from behind by Drew Doughty in the Kings zone. Lehtonen made 30 saves to record his league-leading 12th road victory, sending the Kings to their second loss in 11 games and just their third in regulation over the last 23. "Were trying to gain points in our conference, and the only way were going to do it is by beating good teams," coach Lindy Ruff said. "Our young defencemen responded well to the challenge." Dallas top line of Benn, Seguin and Nichushkin has accounted for 15 goals and 29 points in its last nine games. This was the second time this season that each of them scored in the same game. It also occurred on Dec. 14 in a 6-4 victory at Winnipeg. "They had a little bit of a rough time in San Jose, and probably were out worst line in the game up there. But they responded by coming back tonight and being the reason we won — which was good to see," Ruff said. "Tylers got elite speed, Jamies got elite puck-handling skills and a shot, and so does Tyler. And the 18-year-old (Nichushkin) is young to be something special," he added. "They bring a lot of good things like size and speed, and thats tough to handle." Justin Williams and Jarret Stoll scored first-period goals for Los Angeles. The Kings played without captain Dustin Brown, who missed his first game of the season due to an illness. Jones, who tied Bob Froeses 31-year-old NHL record on Satturday by winning for the eighth time in his first eight NHL games, was going after Ray Emerys mark of nine straight winning decisions from the start of a career.dddddddddddd But the game began inauspiciously for the Kings 23-year-old goalie, as Seguin beat him high to the stick side from the low slot for the tying goal after getting a cross-ice pass from Benn. Less than 2 1-2 minutes later, Benn put Dallas ahead when he carried the puck into the Kings zone and beat Jones to the short side with a backhander over his left shoulder from deep in the right circle. Seguins 19th goal and Benns 11th ended a streak of 11 straight home games in which the Kings had shut out their opponents in the first period. "I just thought about stopping the next one, which is all you can do because whats done is done," said Jones, who had allowed only eight goals on 234 shots in his other eight games. "Theyve got some good offensive guys and they did a good job, but I didnt think we got big saves when we needed it. When you spot a team like that two goals early, its pretty tough to win." Los Angeles held Dallas to just two more shots on net before Stoll tied it at 16:48 of the period with his fifth goal. Referee Mike Leggo had his arm raised to call a delayed penalty for hooking against Alex Goligoski, when Williams pass caromed off the skate of Dallas Antoine Roussel and Stoll whipped a 30-foot slap shot between Lehtonens pads. But Nichushkin put Dallas ahead to stay at 5:07 of the second with his seventh goal, beating Jones to the glove side with a one-timer from the right circle after getting a cross-ice feed from Seguin. It came while Stoll was serving an interference penalty. The Stars were just 5 for 50 on the power play in their previous 14 games. Dallas defenceman Sergei Gonchar was scratched for the first time this season because of concussion-like symptoms, after getting injured in Saturdays 3-2 shootout loss at San Jose. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The NHLs pre-draft scouting combine will be held in Buffalo the next two seasons. NHL Vice-President Colin Campbell on Monday called Buffalo a "natural fit" in announcing the leagues decision at a news conference with the Sabres. The combine had been held outside Toronto, inside a convention centre that provided no on-ice testing and little room for fans. The Pittsburgh Penguins also were finalists to host the combine, but Campell said Buffalo was "heads and toes above everyone else." Scouts, general managers and coaches from all 30 teams attend the NHL scouting combine to gain information on more than 100 prospects. "We want every NHL player to have trained and played in western New York," Sabres President Ted Black said. Two years ago, the Sabres began building a hockey/entertainment complex. The $172 million HarborCenter, funded by Sabres owner Terry Pegula, is to open this fall. It will feature two rinks and a full-service hotel connected by a walkway to the teams downtown arena. Campbell said the NHL does not plan to introduce on-ice testing or open the combine to the public in 2015. The league, however, will look into those options now that there is more space at HarborCenter. He added that Buffalo has a "good chance" of hosting the combine beyond 2016. HarbourCenter will host the under-18 womens and sledge hockey world championships in 2015, as well as USA Hockeys annual All-American Prospects game. Nike Jerseys . PAUL, Minn. Perry scored twice in Anaheims three-goal third period, and Francois Beauchemin added the winning tally with 1:21 left as the Ducks rallied to beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Wednesday night. Beauchemin fired a slap shot past goalie Viktor Fasth, with assists from Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, as the Ducks improved to (50-18-8). "Their team was taking away the far side, so I just tried to shoot it as hard as I could," said Beauchemin, who scored his 10th career winning goal. "I knew (Perry) was going for a rebound if it was there. Fortunately, it went in. I was pretty happy with that one." With the Ducks trailing 2-0, Perry scored his 40th goal just 37 seconds after Jordan Eberle doubled Edmontons lead at 2:51. Perry then tied it at 11:25 with No. 41. It is the second time Perry has reached 40 goals in a season. "Weve been a team thats worked had all year," Perry said. "We have that never-say-die attitude. If we continue to push and play the right way for a full 60 minutes, well be all right." Rookie goalie Frederik Anderson (19-5) stopped 30 shots for the Ducks, 5-0-1 in their last six games. "Thats twice hes come up with a big save," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "He made a big save when it was 2-0 right after their goal. Then we score right away. What a swing. "Theres no way we wouldve come back from 3-0, but Freddie stood tall and made a great save." Philip Larsen scored his third of the season in the first period for Edmonton. Anaheim improved to 27-7-4 at home. Edmonton dropped to 12-22-6 on the road. "The idea of winning 50 games is pretty cool, quite frankly," Boudreau said. "Theres only going to be a few teams that do it, and when youre one of them, its quite an accomplishment. Im pretty proud of the guys for 50 wins." Fasth, who faced his former team for the first time since being dealt for two draft picks a month ago, made 23 saves but dropped to 2-2-1 for the Oilers.dddddddddddd In two seasons with Anaheim, Fasth was 17-8-3 with four shutouts and a 2.32 goals-against average. "There were a lot of emotions," Fasth said. "I had been playing with the guys on the other side for over a year. It was a special feeling. Thats a tough loss." The Pacific Division-leading Ducks are three points ahead of second-place San Jose with a game in hand. Anaheim trails Western-Conference leading St. Louis by one point. Edmonton, last in the Pacific Division, will finish a three-game road trip at Phoenix on Friday. The Oilers, who have scored on just 16.4 per cent of their power plays this season, took advantage of one to grab a 1-0 lead over the Ducks. Larsen drilled the puck into the upper right corner of the net on the glove side with 3:56 left in the second period. Edmonton outshot the Ducks 24-15 over the first two periods and took a 1-0 lead into the third. The Oilers doubled their lead on Eberles 26th goal of the season. "Its heartbreaking," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "Its games like these that you want your players to feel the reward of the points. When we had it 2-0, we had an unbelievable chance in front of the net and a rebound that, if it would have went to three, it would have been over for sure. But then again, with the Ducks, you never know. "They seem to be very, very good at never being out of a game. We have to find a way to close it out." NOTES: Anaheim leads the NHL with 3.23 goals per game. ... CHICAGO -- When the Los Angeles Clippers lost All-Star Chris Paul to a separated shoulder, they turned to Blake Griffin for leadership. And he has responded by stepping up his play. Griffin had 26 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 112-95 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday night. The Clippers improved to 7-3 since Paul, who was averaging 19.6 points and 11.2 assists, was injured. "Blake doesnt run from a challenge," Clippers guard Jamal Crawford said. "Hes one of the hardest workers Ive seen." The Clippers enjoyed a strong outside game, opening up Griffin on the inside, and he finished with his 27th double-double. "(I want to be) a leader for us, knocking down shots and being able to mix up my game, going inside when I felt the need to and going outside when I needed to," Griffin said. Crawford added 19 points for the Clippers, who had six players score in double figures and shot 54 per cent from the field -- including 13 for 21 on 3-pointers. DeAndre Jordan added 10 points and 12 rebounds. "They were open, the right guy was taking them, all of our 3-point shooters," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "They made them, and that opened it up for Blake." Carlos Boozer scored 22 points for the Bulls, who snapped a three-game winning streak. "I dont think any aspect of our defence was any good," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. The Clippers have won four straight against the Bulls, and improved to 3-2 on their seven-game trip. Chicago cut the lead to eight in the third quarter but Darren Collison answered with two quick baskets and the Clippers led 92-80 heading to the fourth. Los Angeles got off to a strong start. The Clippers shot 10 for 14 on 3s and finished 64.1 per cent overall from the field in the first half to take a 68-55 lead at halftime. Jordans dunk gave the Clippers a 60-39 lead, their largest margin, with 3:52 left before halftime. Los Angeles was 7 for 8 from beyond the arc in the first quarter to set a franchise record for 3s in a quarter. The Clippers led 41-26 after shooting 73.7 per cent in the period. "Thats kind of what we talked about, especially defensively," Griffin said about the quick start. "But we still didnt do a good job in the first quarter. We were just so hot early. We got that lead and kept it. Especially on the road, you never want to come out sluggish." In the teams previous meeting, the Clippers routed the Bulls 121-82 on Nov. 24 for their worst loss of the season in the first game after Derrick Rose suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Clippers were averaging 105.4 points, fifth in the league. The Bulls were one of the NBAs top defensive teams, holding opponents to 92.5 points per game before Friday. "Giving up 3s, we strive for five or less," Bulls forward Taj Gibson said. "That was just crazy. We kept fighting. But once they give a team like that confidence, its hard to shut them off." J.J. Redick scored 18 points and shot 4 for 7 from 3-point range. Collison, playing despite a sprained toe, had 17 points. Boozer, back from a one-game absence due to a sore left calf, scored 16 points in the first quarter. Gibson added 18 points, Mike Dunleavy had 17 and Joakim Noah 12 as the Bulls shot 43 per cent from the field and 6 for 19 from 3-point range. The Bulls were without Kirk Hinrich, who missed his second consecutive game with a strained right hamstring. "I think we were passive," Bulls guard Jimmy Butler said. "I dont like the word soft, but I think we were a little bit of that too. They got the shots they wanted to get. We didnt make it too tough for them at all." NOTES: Rivers said the Bulls shouldnt let Thibodeau get away. Thibodeau was on Rivers coaching staff from 2007-10 with the Boston Celtics. "I think it would be nuts not to have him here," Rivers said. "Hes the best coach, one of the best coaches, in the league, so if you have that, thats an asset. And I dont think any right-minded organization would allow that asset to leave. Because with all this adversity theyve had with injuries, if you allow that one to leave, things will fall apart -- and that would be pretty much a guarantee." Thibodeau declined to address rumours about his future. ... Hinrich will possibly miss the Bulls trip to Charlotte on Saturday as he continues to receive treatment, Thibodeau said. ... HOYLAKE, England -- Old Tom Morris would barely recognize the British Open these days. Its one thing for golf to evolve from gutta percha to polyurethane, from niblicks to hybrids, from hickory to graphite. Now the British Open is all about LED screens, apps and routers. Yes, there are wireless routers affixed to every grandstand at Royal Liverpool. Leave it to the Royal & Ancient to be on the cutting edge of digital technology among major championships. The British Open is believed to be the first major golf event to offer wireless in every grandstand, allowing spectators with mobile phone and tablets to watch the BBC coverage, track their favourite player through GPS, and get details through up-to-the minute scoring updates. "The experience for our spectators will, I believe, be the best they have ever received," said Peter Unsworth, chairman of the R&As championship committee. "Using their own smartphones and tablets, and our groundbreaking Wi-Fi network which is available in every grandstand, they will be able to enjoy live BBC television and radio coverage, live scoring and get news and updates without leaving their seat. "The information available to our spectators has never been so readily available." And to think this major only three years ago banned cellphones from the golf course. Now theyre telling spectators theyre missing out if they dont have them. The R&A last year installed wireless signals as an experiment, with the source of streaming capabilities coming from London. It was so pleased with the result that it now has installed its own fiber optic network at most of the links courses where it holds The Open, starting with Hoylake. Malcolm Booth, the R&As communications director, said the signal is strong enough for as many as 20,000 fans to stream video at the same time. A popular theme at the R&A over the last two decades has been finding a balance between tradition and technology. R&A chief executive Peter Dawson always thought that would involve only equipment. Now he is trying to grasp a world of live streaming and second-screen channels. "What it will be 10 years from now I can scarcely imagine," Dawson said. Traditions die hard at the oldest golf championship in the world, which dates to 1860. Tom Watson, a five-time champion who played his first British Open before Tiger Woods was even born, couldnt help notice some of the changes during a practice round Monday. "What happened to the yellow scoreboards?" he said. For starters, the scoreboards changed from yellow to green years ago, but point taken. For the longest time, there was a manual scoreboard behind each green that showed the cumulative score of the players on that hole, and the scores of the group next to play. Those are gone, replaced by LED screens that now give scores, news updates on the championship, and even a rules quiz during the practice rounds. "Theyre in the modern age," Watson said. Dawson said former championship committee chairman Jim McArthur was a strong advocate for getting up to speed with digital technology, and it then was turned over to Booth and the communications department. Booth said it wasnt a hard sell to the Royal & Ancient, though "there was a lot of explaining to do." "There was a need to explain how this could impact on the experience for spectators," he said. "Having a radio at the Open is not new. People have been doing it for decades. Having a television picture on a hand-held device has been pretty common at big events like the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup. They were aware of these devices. What they werent sure about was how easy it was to take that technology and have it on each persons phones." Oddly enough, it was at Royal Liverpool in 2006 when spectators took so many pictures with their phones that mobile devices were banned the following year. The R&A finally relented on that strict policy in 2012 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. Now it has Wi-Fi networks, routers, live streaming, geofencing. Is there anything still ancient about the Royal & Ancient? "Me," Dawson said with a smile. He retires next year after 16 years as chief executive, the last few years filled with technology changes he never imagined. He still likes the balance between old and new. The Open still is played on the same turf where Old Tom Morris and Willie Park Sr. vied for championships. The claret jug has been passed around for 86 years. "But I think in the modern era," Dawson said, "the way that people now embrace this technology is something that golf also has to embrace." Sean Newcomb Jersey .A. Happ? Happs seven wins are second on the staff to Mark Buehrles 10. Win-loss record is an antiquated stat, sure, but win total is generally an indication of a pitchers ability to work deep into games, enough to be personally affected by the result. A few loose pucks could make the difference between playing for the Chicago Blackhawks and a trip to the minors. The loaded Blackhawks return mostly intact after losing to eventual NHL champion Los Angeles in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals on June 1. While injuries or an upcoming salary-cap move could shake up the picture a bit, it looks as if there are very few open spots in the lineup heading into the preseason. "You look at our roster, most guys are in place," coach Joel Quenneville said. "But there are still some things to be sorted out. As you go along, competition for quality ice time internally will be in place as well. We dont have our lines set in stone game in and game out. I guess well call that competition. As far as spots, well see how that plays out." After four days of testing, practice and scrimmages at Notre Dame, the competition for that precious little roster space shifted to the United Center on Monday night for the teams training camp festival. Marcus Kruger had two goals and an assist to lead the White team to a 5-1 victory over the Red squad in the featured scrimmage. Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith and forward Teuvo Teravainen were among a group of players who rested during the festivities, which attracted a sold-out crowd even with the Chicago Bears playing on Monday Night Football. "Really impressive," said centre Brad Richards, who signed with Chicago in the off-season. "For a Red and White game ... I havent been a part of something like that. So it just makes you feel better about choosing to come here." It was the Blackhawks first public appearance at their longtime home since they were eliminated by the Kings on Alec Martinezs overtime goal in Game 7.dddddddddddd Martinezs shot went off Chicago defenceman Nick Leddy and fluttered over goaltender Corey Crawford, a nightmare for the Blackhawks that ended their bid for a repeat title and lingered into the summer for many of the players. "You dont want to say its one situation. We got beat by a good team," Quenneville said. "But I liked how we played that game. There were a lot of positives which made it tougher than saying we threw it away." Chicago plays its first exhibition game Tuesday night against Detroit, and the preseason schedule could go a long way to answering the biggest question about the team. The Blackhawks are about $2.2 million above the salary cap and will have to make a move before the regular-season opener Oct. 9 at Dallas. General manager Stan Bowman has said the preseason will give the team a chance to take a look at which position it feels can afford to lose a veteran player. It also could create demand for Chicagos players if there is an injury on another club. But right now, it looks as if the only competition when it comes to the lineup is one of the wings on the fourth line and the last couple of defencemen. Teravainen, one of the teams top prospects, also could force his way into the mix. "We say the players make the decisions for us," Quenneville said. "How theyre competing is one way to look at it. If theyre competing hard, you know they want to be here in the worst way and they want to get better in the position theyre at as well. The battle level and how bad they want it is probably the best way to measure guys in those positions." ' ' '

SAN FRANCISCO -- Tim Hudson has spent most of the season leading the San Francisco Giants to victories. This time, his teammates backed him up on a rare off night. Michael Morse hit an RBI single with one out in the ninth inning after Hunter Pences tying double, and the Giants rallied to beat the New York Mets 5-4 Saturday night to extend baseballs best record. "It just tells you what kind of team we have," said Morse, who helped teammates tear off his jersey during a wild celebration on the infield. "We find a way." Angel Pagan had three singles, two RBIs and got on base all five times against his former team. He reached leading off the ninth when catcher Anthony Recker dropped the third strike and his throw pulled Lucas Duda off first base. Mets manager Terry Collins challenged the play but lost. Pence hit a double that scored Pagan and advanced to third on Buster Poseys deep fly to left-centre. After Jenrry Mejia (1-2) intentionally walked Pablo Sandoval, Morse sent a single to deep right and was mobbed by teammates before he reached second. San Francisco improved to 6-0 at home when Hudson starts. "Im as proud of this game as I have been of any of them," said Hudson, who allowed season highs of nine hits and three walks in five innings. "Even though it was probably my worst game from a pitching standpoint, these kinds of games are very satisfying because these are the games that most of the time your teams lose when your starting pitcher goes out there and doesnt really have his stuff. We were able to battle and win. Thats the mark of a championship club." It was Mejias first blown save in seven chances. The Mets have lost five straight. Jeremy Affeldt (2-1) tossed one scoreless inning to help the Giants (41-21) win for the ninth time in 11 games. Bartolo Colon gave up three runs -- one earned -- and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings for the Mets. The 41-year-old, who spent the past two seasons across the bay in Oakland, struck out four and walked two. Hudson, who began the game with a majors-best 1.75 ERA, is the first pitcher in San Francisco history with an ERA below 2.00 through his first 12 starts with the team. Even with the tough outing, Hudsons ERA is 1.97. The Mets grabbed leads of 3-0 and 4-1, but stranded 12 runners on base. "We did a good job of limiting the damage," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. The Mets ended Hudsons scoreless streak at 16 consecutive innings in the second, when Duda doubled and scored on Reckers single. In the third, Duda broke his bat hitting an RBI single off the wall in right and Recker drove in another run to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. The Mets might have had more if not for a baserunning blunder. Ruben Tejada was tagged out between second and third after Duda stopped at third and Recker ran to second. With the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth, Posey grounded into a double play to score San Franciscos first run. Colon then got Sandoval to fly out. New York extended its lead to 4-1 on a wild pitch by George Kontos in the sixth, but couldnt overcome an error by third baseman David Wright in the bottom of the inning. Wright fielded a grounder and misfired to second trying to get the lead runner with two outs. Pagan followed with a two-run single to bring the Giants within 4-3 and chase Colon. Pences single loaded the bases for Posey again, but Jeurys Familia struck out Posey on a sinking fastball clocked at 96 mph. NOTES: Giants reliever Santiago Casilla, who is on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, threw 30 pitches in the bullpen. He is scheduled to throw again before Mondays game and could begin a rehab assignment as soon as Wednesday. ... The Canadian Football Leagues ninth team, the Ottawa Redblacks, still have a long way to go. The 2014 season does have a grace period around it as far as the football season goes and if the Redblacks finish 2-16, which is a distinct possibility, then so be it. From my perception I am just enjoying the fact they are back in the league and as a whole the league is one step closer to a magical 10th team. I anticipated they would have their difficulties and though going into the 18th week of play I was hoping for more than two wins I am not overly disappointed but mildly concerned. The Redblacks organization has a good fan base. They are young, loud and from what I can see from my television screen enjoying TD Place and all that goes with it. But next year if they do not start winning and competing there wont be as many in the seats. And the year after that if things dont change there will be a few less again. And the pattern could be established. It is a challenge in CFL football that the bottom two or even three teams do have attendance issues and the top two or three dont have that problem. I find this issue similar in almost all sports but in the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB your television revenues and number of teams hide the issue. The NFL has a problem drawing in-stadium fans win or lose and other teams do that do not have success. It is not an unusual problem but in our league it can mean profit or debt. I am very confident in all the people running the Redblacks but next year has to be different and truth is the last three games this year can set up next year. Nothing is more important than finding and keeping good players. In Hamilton it was a good move picking up Nick Grigsby as a running back. Not sure what happened in Winnipeg but who cares. For the Ticats he is a hired gun to replace the ability of injured Mossis Madu and CJ Gable. Come in, learn the offence and have a good attitude. Without a running back I dont give the Ticats much of a chance but with a running back or just the threat of a running game the Ticats are as good as any in the East and can finish first or third. To run an effective offence six things have to be equal in effectiveness. Interior runs and perimeter runs. Deceptive and trick plays, draws screens, and reverse plays. Short, intermediate and long pass plays and a short yardage package of plays. When you start listing these, all of a sudden in your playbook you have over 200 plays to cover all the areas but, and this is critical, without a good running back you can eliminate half of what you want to do. Good job of Hamilton picking up Grigsby. He may have attitude questions but he is a great athlete and an educated running back. With Montreal, surprise, surprise they are looking good. Jonathan Crompton has a unique skill set but it works and this was a typical game for him, 19-of-28, 219 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Nothing spectacular at all but when the game ends, Montreal wins. Defensively only 12 yards allowed in the third quarter for the Argonauts and they could not get past their own 40-yard line. Tom Higgins as a head coach has earned some credit. His re-organization of the offence has worked and what was dysfunctional is now rather efficient. Jeff Garcia makes a difference and Higgins stayed the course. With Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton 1-2-3 in the division, Montreal controls it all and I would have never thought that 10 weeks ago. What I do think now is that Calgary is the best in the league and Jon Cornish is a very good running back. Those are obvious statements I know but as a team with exceptional depth Calgary is exceptional. And with Dave Dickenson calling plays Cornish receives his opportunities to excel. Dickenson never forgets his best player and it seems like every two, three or at the most four plays it is Cornish who gets the ball. Its smart, disciplined play calling from a smart disciplined former player in Dave Dickenson. Winnipeg is experiencing the same issue, a defence that cant play effective run defence as Cornish ran for 160 yards on only 21 carries. In Sunday afternoons Edmonton-Saskatchewan game Kerry Joseph started at quarterback and I was surprised. It had been October 2012 since he had been a starter and overall he did not look out of place. He was not great statistically but provided a calming effect and some good moments. Take away the Kendial Lawrence kick return for a touchdown and the Riders could have won that one. Would I stick with Joseph for the Calgary game next week and Edmonton the final week? Yes I would. Overall 17-of-36 for 213 yards is not spectacular but I think given more reps and time Joseph will improve. I cant say that with the other two quarterbacks on the Riders roster right now. Watch out for B.C. They have gone three straight games without a touchdown allowed on defence. They are playing Winnipeg and Edmonton on the road, but Week 20 at home to Calgary may be a meaningless game for the Stampeders. And finally, watch out for Montreal. They look confident and holding Ray to 200 yards passing says a lot. Three weeks to go, and six playoff opportunities around the league. Balenciaga Triple s Cheap . This time Toronto was not able to get a win, but they were able to get a much-needed point on the road to extend its unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-2 draw Saturday night. First half goals by Gilberto and Dominic Oduro were enough for Toronto (7-5-5, 26 points) to earn the draw. "Id rather get three points than a goal, but we showed we are a strong team right now," said Oduro. "We fought hard. In this heat, to get a point on a road -- any time you get a point on the road is good. We showed we had character today. Thats what the coaching staff has been trying to tell us, and thats what we are trying to learn." Toronto missed a chance to tie the score at two in the 28th minute as Michael Bradley missed a penalty kick off the right post. Toronto was awarded the penalty kick a minute earlier as Nick Hagglund was brought down in the box by Corey Ashe. Oduro, however, was able to tie it in first half stoppage by chesting a Luke Moore pass into the right net from the centre goalkeepers box after Moore was able to beat A.J. Cochran down the left endline. "We know we have the ability to score goals," Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen said. "I think it was fatigue in that second half that probably dampened our attacking flair. Obviously, that penalty didnt help when that misses. That kind of deflates the team, but they kept going and going and going. I couldnt be happier for the boys, especially when you have to back up a Wednesday and come to Houston in July. Thats tough." Oduro scored his second goal in three games -- both in first half stoppage agaiinst his former team.dddddddddddd Oduro said his goal was critical and motivated the team going into the locker room. "Its always good to score against my former team, but thats not the idea of it," said Oduro said. "It kind of helps. It boosted our spirits. I want to score against any team no matter what. Just sometimes, scoring against a former team is a bit bittersweet." Toronto needed that goal as they were unable to get much going in the second half, with only two shots on net. Gilberto tied it at one in the 18th minute, taking a pass in the center box from Justin Morrow, dribbling to his right and striking a right-footed shot through traffic and into the left net from 16 yards out. The goal was Gilbertos second of the season. "Im very happy with the result," Gilberto said through a translator. "Happy I scored. I want to continue working hard and providing for the team and to increase my work ethic so I can help on the field." Giles Barnes put Houston (5-11-4, 19 points) back up in the 26th minute at 2-1, shooting from 25 yards out in the middle and getting it just inside the near post. Will Bruin gave the Dynamo a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, capitalizing on a Toronto turnover and beating Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik to the ball on the right side of the goalkeepers box and hitting it into the left net. Michael Bradleys header back to the Toronto defence went to Bradley Orr, who tried to back pass it to Bendik, but Bruin was able to knock it free to set up the goal. Houston, which saw its winless streak stretched to eight games, nearly doubled its lead seconds before Gilbertos goal as Brad Davis headed the ball to himself and turned and fired from the upper left box, but was stopped by Bendik. Almost 40 years to the day since playing their first ever match against San Jose Earthquakes, the Vancouver Whitecaps will face the Quakes once again on Saturday, as the club celebrates its 40th anniversary. But amidst the celebrations, its important the Whitecaps return to winning ways in Major League Soccer against an Earthquakes team that is below them in the Western Conference standings. The Form: Its now four matches without a victory for the Whitecaps who are yet to win against a Western Conference opponent this season, but they have tied their last two games against two of the top teams in Major League Soccer. In Utah last Saturday, the Whitecaps started terribly, going two goals down inside the first nine minutes against Real Salt Lake, but the second half was much improved, and a late comeback ensured the Whitecaps left Rio Tinto Stadium with a point. The Big Question: Will either of the Uruguayans be given the chance to start? Nicolas Mezquida and Sebastian Fernandez made an impact coming off the bench at Real Salt Lake a week ago, both scoring a goal, including a fantastic strike from Fernandez in the final minute of stoppage time to tie the match. Prior to the game, Carl Robinson said last week that the Uruguayan duo had been performing very well in training and wear very close to getting a start in the team. Mezquida has appeared in four matches this season, all as a substitute, while Fernandez started the season but then was left on the bench after a couple of less effective performances. With a Canadian Championship semifinal against Toronto FC coming up on Wednesday, its likely Mezquida and Fernandez will start at least one of the two games. "Everyone will get their chance," said Robinson after training on Thursday. "As a player, all you want is the chance to play and show what you can do, and most of the players will get that chance." The Lineup: Chilean midfielder Pedro Morales missed the trip to Real Salt. Lake to try and heal a back problem that has plagued him in the opening weeks of the season, but if he has fully recovered, he is likely to return to the Whitecaps lineup. Once again, there is a big decision for Carl Robinson in the centre of defence. Last week, Jay DeMerit stayed at home as Honduran international Johnny Leveron partnered Andy OBrien at the back. Robinson must decide whether to stick with that pairing and bring some consistency to the back line, or bring DeMerit back into the eleven. Nigel Reo-Coker played the first three matches of the season but hasnt played since due to injury, coachs decision and most recently illness. Its doubtful that Reo-Coker will be considered for the starting lineup but he could return on the bench. The Opposition: San Jose Earthquakes started the season with a five match winless run, but that came to an end last weekend when they won 1-0 at home to Chivas USA. The Quakes are yet to win away from home this season, losing 1-0 at Kansas City and tying 0-0 at Colorado. Yannick Djalo scored the only goal of the game against Chivas. The 27-year-old from Portugal is still adapting in his first few weeks in Major League Soccer as he gets fully fit, but he is a quality addition for the Quakes this season, joining on loan from Benfica. 2012 MLS MVP Chris Wondolowski has scored three goals in six matches so far this season as he looks to win a place in Jurgen Klinsmanns United States squad for this summers World Cup in Brazil. The 31-year-old has an excellent goal scoring record against the Whitecaps. On a day where there will be plenty of focus on the soccer history of Vancouver, it is fitting that there is a heavy Vancouver presence amongst the Earthquakes coaching staff. Head Coach Mark Watson played for Whitecaps in 1994 and 2005 while assistant coach Nick Dasovic previously played for the 86ers and was a player coach with Caps from 2002 to 2005. Both men are from Vancouver. The Odds: The Earthquakes are yet to win in Vancouver against the Whitecaps in Major League Soccer and the Caps must be favourites heading in. Carl Robinsons team are four points ahead of the Quakes in the standings but have played two games more. The Whitecaps continue to develop under Robinson, but they must start to put together 90 minute performances if they are to get back to winning ways. Where To Watch: Whitecaps against San Jose is live on TSN2 on Saturday. Were on air with a special Whitecaps 40th anniversary pre-match show at 6:30pm et/3:30pm pt. Lefty was 11 strokes behind leader Steven Bowditch, the Australian who had a 67 to reach 8-under 136.DENVER - Matt Duchene works on his shootout moves before every game. His efforts paid off for the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.Duchene and Alex Tanguay scored shootout goals, Semyon Varlamov stopped both of Edmontons shooters and the Avalanche beat the Oilers 2-1.Varlamov had 27 saves in regulation and overtime, and Daniel Briere scored in regulation for Colorado. It was the fifth straight shootout win for the Avalanche, who are 6-2-2 in their last 10.Its great to start the new year, with a big win, Duchene said. We want to roll through January here.He got his team off to a good start. After both teams failed to convert on their first shootout opportunities, Duchene skated slowly into the zone, got goalie Ben Scrivens to go down and beat him with a low shot.Me and Mario (Duhamel), our video coach, come up with something before each game, Duchene said. I think the biggest thing is each goalie has a different style and I just tried to get him to bite and make him change direction.Varlamov made a save on Jordan Eberle, and Tanguay skated slowly at the net and finished it with a roof shot over a sprawled Scrivens. Its tough when they come in so slow, Scrivens said. Its not a game situation where they have back pressure. Duchene has a good shot. You have to respect his shot. He is a good player.Ben Pouliot scored for Edmonton, and Scrivens finished with 27 saves. The Oilers, who are last in the NHL in points with 25, are 1-7-4 in their last 11 games and 1-9 in games decided after regulation.I thought our overtime period was a lot better than weve seen in the past, Edmonton coach Todd Nelson said. We had puck control, we had some good, quality chances, but we have to shoot the puck in those situations.Neither team generated much offence until the Avalaanche broke through in the second period.dddddddddddd. Duchene, one of the many Colorado forwards struggling to score, carried the puck behind the net to the front and fed Briere on the opposite side. Briere knocked the puck into an open net at 7:55 of the period. It was his seventh of the season and first in 13 games.I was able to get a step on the guy coming out front, Duchene said. I was just trying to put it over there. He is such a smart player and wouldnt miss that one.Edmonton generated just five shots in the second period, but gained some momentum with three consecutive power plays. After failing to capitalize on the first two, Pouliot tied it at 4:47 of the third with his sixth of the season. The big left wing, who returned to action after missing 18 games with a broken foot, muscled through defenceman Jan Hejda to knock a rebound past Varlamov to tie it at 1.He made an impact for us, Nelson said of Pouliot. He played a simple, solid game and capitalized on the goal, obviously. This is kind of a tough spot for him, coming back here. Its hard to breathe, but he had short shifts. Both teams had chances to take the lead. Colorados Gabriel Landeskogs backhander at a wide-open goal hit the side of the net, and Edmontons Teddy Purcell hit the right post with a shot midway through the third.Colorado didnt get its first shot on net in the third until 7:15 was left in regulation. The Avalanche were outshot 12-3 in the third.NOTES: The Oilers acquired C Rob Klinkhammer and a 2015 first-round pick from Pittsburgh for LW David Perron. ... Edmonton D Keith Aulie served the first game of his two-game suspension for his hit on Calgary F Matt Stajan on Wednesday. ... Avalanche D Zach Redmond was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. ' ' '

The day after Brandon Morrow walked eight batters in just two and 2/3rds innings and got the hook, Ricky Romero had a two-inning control meltdown of his own Sunday at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo. Facing the Reds Triple A affiliate Louisville, Romero walked the bases loaded in the first inning and again in the second, but he escaped unscathed both times and actually lasted five innings. Romero didnt give up any more walks and didnt surrender a run during the stint. Earlier in the week, an upbeat Romero was on TSN Drive with Dave Naylor and co-host Dave Hodge and said he felt he was pitching better than he had been in a year and a half. He also said he would welcome a call-up right now if the Blue Jays needed or wanted him. As shaky as the Jays starting pitching has been this season, especially over this just completed homestand, Romero doesnt figure to get called up anytime soon. He simply has to be more consistent with his control. The largest pitcher I have ever seen in the Majors is C.C Sabathia. Though he has trimmed down now a bit, there were times over the past two or three years where he weighed between 285 and 300 pounds. Well in that same Buffalo-Louisville game on Sunday, the Bats used a closer by the name of Jose Diaz. A year ago, the 64 native of the Dominican Republic pitched at 347 pounds and of course was known by the nickname of Jumbo. This year having just turned 30, he realized it might be time to shave off a few pounds to try and prolong his career. He got down to 278, but the stat sheets now are listing him at 315. Jumbo racked up his sixth save Sunday against the Bisons. He throws with pretty good velocity, too. Cincinnati already has Aroldis Chapman as their closer, but who knows at some point, he may surface in the Majors. Historic Lineup Since the Blue Jays in the Pat Gillick era were one of the very first teams to extensively scout and sign talent out of the Dominican Republic, it only seems fitting that on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre, they became the first team in Major League history to field a starting lineup that included six players born in the Dominican. The starting 9 included Jose Reyes, Melky Cabrera, Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Juan Francisco and Moises Sierra. An equally, if not more, historic moment occurred back on Sept 1 of 1971 when the Pittsburgh Pirates fielded an entire starting lineup of African American and Latin American players including Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell. The rest of the starting 9 included Al Oliver, who later played with the Expos and the Blue Jays, Rennie Stennett, Jackie Hernandez, Dave Cash, Manny Sanguillen, Gene Clines and starting pitcher Dock Ellis. Better April The Blue Jays started last season at 10-17 in April and they are already guaranteed a better first month this time around. John Gibbons and company are 12-13 with two games at Kansas City left in this month. But something to remember, there were only two playoff teams with losing Aprils in the American League a year ago. Tampa Bay went 12-14 but rebounded to finish 91-71 to earn a play in the knockout game with Texas to decide the second Wild Card spot. Cleveland earned the first Wild Card at 92-70 after opening April at 11-13. Conversely Texas had the best record in April at 17-8, but finished the season in that knock-out game at 91-71. All of that means if the Blue Jays are going to need 91 victories to have a shot at the playoffs this year, they will have to go 79-58 the rest of the year or 21 games over .500. Thats not impossible, but the starting rotation will have to be far better the rest of the way. Right now, the Blue Jays staff era is 4.45, 25th in the Majors, just slightly ahead of Baltimore at 4.49. I dont know if this is a plus but the only team in the AL East with a sub -4.00 era is Boston at 3.90 and the BoSox are fourth in the division just behind the Blue Jays. This and That Its really interesting to look at the early season gap in some pitching categories between the National League and the American. The Senior Circuit has eight of the top 10 staff ERAs. Only Oakland and K.C. break into that group. The National League has had 10 complete games to just four for the American, including two by Texas. There have been 34 shutouts in the National League to 23 in the American. St. Louis has six and Texas leads the American with six. I guess it just helps to illustrate why Ervin Santana chose Atlanta over the Blue Jays. After going 7-9 in their 1st 16 game segment against the East, the Jays have a 20-game stretch where they dont play their own division at all. Their next game against the East is May 20 at Fenway Park in Boston. In fact, they only have six games against the East for the entire month of May, getting Tampa Bay at home the week after that Boston series. The All-Star voting has begun for the Mid-summer Classic Tuesday July 15th at Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins. If voting closed today, the only Blue Jays on my ballot would be lefty Mark Buehrle and Melky Cabrera. Jose Bautista could make it as well, but more on his name and All-Star reputation at this point. I also did a rough count and if Buehrle keeps it up, his natural turn to pitch would fall on All-Star Tuesday so their might even be a chance he could start. But thats still a lot of innings pitched and a long way off. Nike Air Max Plus Günstig . -- Theres been so much talk about Mike Moustakas at the plate that the third baseman ignored the conversation Wednesday -- even after doing something positive.Green Bay, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took the majority of snaps at practice Thursday in preparation for Sundays NFC Divisional Playoff game against Dallas. Rodgers has a strained left calf that has also been reported as a slight tear, an injury he originally suffered in a Week 16 game against Tampa Bay and aggravated during Green Bays division-clinching win over Detroit in the final week of the regular season. Aaron practiced in the team periods, said Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Thursday. He looked good. He went down and did everything we asked him to do today. McCarthy said Rodgers took aboutt 50-to-60 percent of the reps during Thursdays workout.dddddddddddd Rodgers was officially listed as a limited participant in practice Thursday, similar to what he did before the Week 17 game against the Lions. He missed two series during the Detroit game after limping off the field, but returned and led the Packers to a 30-20 victory that gave Green Bay the NFC North title and a much-needed first-round bye that enabled the former MVP to rest his ailing calf. The 31-year-old veteran put up MVP-like numbers again in 2014, completing 65.6 percent of his passes for 4,381 yards with 38 touchdowns and just five interceptions. ' ' '
