SAN FRANCISCO -- Jesse Hahn learned everything he knows about sports from his father. The San Diego Padres are happy he was paying attention. Hahn pitched six strong innings, Alexi Amarista drove in three runs on three hits and San Diego handed the stumbling San Francisco Giants their 12th loss in the past 15 games, 7-2 Tuesday night. "Thats an old school curveball," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Its top to bottom and he has a good feel for it. Not many guys throw it that way, which is a good thing." Hahns father, Fred, showed him the grip and hes thrown it the same way ever since. "Im throwing it for more strikes now," Hahn said. "I just kept throwing it and got comfortable with it. He showed me in high school. He taught me everything about football, basketball and baseball. He was a pretty good athlete himself." Will Venable drove in two runs and Hahn (3-1) earned his third straight victory for the Padres, who won their fifth in the last seven games. "We have a few more guys swinging the bat better," Black said. "Were getting the big hits." Tim Hudson (7-4) lost for the first time at home this season, allowing six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. "I felt pretty good," Hudson said. "You have to give them credit. When I made a mistake, they were able to take advantage." Hudson has allowed a combined 13 runs over his last two starts after giving up 19 over his first 13. Hudson was 6-0 in his first 11 starts against San Diego and has since lost three of four. "Hes elevating the ball more than hed like," Black said. "His stuff and his pitches all look the same. Its probably location more than anything." Hahn allowed his first earned run in 18 innings when Pablo Sandoval scurried home on Tyler Corbins infield groundout in the fifth. He yielded two runs on four hits over six innings. Hahn walked one and struck out a season-high eight. Hahn retired the first 12 hitters before giving up back-to-back singles to Sandoval and Michael Morse opening the fifth. Amarista, 1 for 9 against Hudson entering the game, was hitless in his eight previous at bats, though hes 9 for 25 (.360) in his last eight games. Cameron Maybin added two hits and drove in a run for the Padres. Hudson got three double plays in the first four innings before a fifth-inning error on rookie Joe Panik, his second of the game, helped the Padres score twice to open a 3-0 lead. Jake Gobbert, in his first start since being recalled Thursday, singled and Maybin was safe on Paniks miscue. Amarista doubled in a run and Venable, who hit a sacrifice fly in the third, drove in a run on a groundout. "Those are the situations you have to find a way to push those guys across," Venable said. "The easy job is putting the ball in play after some great at bats." Amarista singled home a pair of runs and Maybin delivered an RBI single. Tommy Medica added a pinch-hit home run, the first of his career, with two outs in the eighth. Buster Posey doubled home a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2. NOTES: Padres RHP Andrew Cashner, on the DL with a sore shoulder, is expected to play catch on Friday in San Diego. ... The Padres lost a seventh-inning review on Brandon Crawfords infield single. The review lasted 2:09. . RHP Ian Kennedy (5-8, 3.90) starts Wednesdays series finale for the Padres. Hes 7-3 with a 2.49 ERA in 18 starts against the Giants. . RHP Tim Lincecum (5-5, 4.90) makes the start for the Giants. Hes 14-6 with a 2.47 ERA in 27 career starts against the Padres. ... Alfredo Simon lowered his ERA to 0.86, and the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 Friday for their 16th win in their last 17 games at the Friendly Confines.VANCOUVER -- Perspective is always important. Maybe thats why midfielder Russell Teibert managed to sound enthusiastic about a schedule that sees the Vancouver Whitecaps play their third Major League Soccer game in eight days. The Whitecaps match against Real Salt Lake Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium comes on the heels of a 1-1 draw Wednesday in Toronto against Toronto FC and a 3-1 loss to Chivas USA Saturday at home in BC Place Stadium. The Whitecaps will have travelled over 7,300 kilometres by the time they return to Vancouver. The stretch can be physically exhausting but Teiberts rational is more games in a short time period means increased playing minutes for everyone on the team. "I think its the most exciting stretch to be going through, especially with the squad we have this year," said the 21-year-old from Niagara Falls, Ont., who played 82 minutes against Toronto after not getting on the field against Chivas. "You never know when you are going to have the chance to be on the field. Now that we have more games theres a better chance you have in playing. Its exciting and it keeps all the guys on their toes." A win would help Vancouver gain ground in MLSs competitive Western Conference. Heading into the weekend the Whitecaps are sixth in the West with 26 points from a 6-4-8 record. That leaves them just two points back of Salt Lake, which has a 7-4-7 record. "Each point, each win is vital," said Teibert. "Hopefully we get a good result and can jump back up there." Perspective can also be applied in analyzing the Whitecaps recent fortunes. For three months Vancouver rode a franchise-record eight game unbeaten streak (3-0-5). During that stretch the team scored 18 goals but allowed 14. Over their last four games the Whitecaps are 1-2-1. The team has managed just three goals and allowed six. "You are always going to have ups and downs in a season, thats professional sport," said Teibert. "Its how you handle those up and downs. "We have got a couple of draws and we did lose an unfortunate game last weekend. Its all about moving forward." Defender Steven Beitashour cant explain why the ball suddenly isnt going into the net for the Whitecaps. "I dont know what the reason is for that," said Beitashour, a member of Irans team at the recent World Cup in Brazil. "Any time we play we try to put up as many goals as possible and give up zero goals."t; Teams often improve defensively as the season progresses, said Beitashour, who is playing in his fifth MLS season.dddddddddddd The Whitecaps are also still adapting to new coach Carl Robinson. "The coaching staff has more time with the team," he said. "Guys are getting used to each others tendencies and things like that. "With Carl being new here we are all trying to understand exactly what he wants defensively and we are starting to jell together." Real Salt Lake has struggled of late and is winless in their last five games (0-3-2). One problem is goal scoring. In the first five games of the season Salt Lake scored 23 goals. In their next seven the team managed just four, with two of those coming on penalty kicks in one match. In the first 11 games Salt Lake was shutout once. In the last seven games they have been shut out four times. Defender Tony Beltran said no one is panicking. "I feel like we talk about that every year at a certain point," he told the Real Salt Lake website. "We trust our forwards. We trust our midfielders. "We know theyre capable of finishing chances when they get them. For whatever reasons theyre not going in right now." Coach Jeff Cassar wants more production from his forwards, but said scoring is a team effort. "Scoring chances dont just come from the forwards," he said. "It comes from the build up. Getting numbers forward. "We need that final pass to not be close, but to be perfect, so that they (forwards) are then able to do their thing." The last time the two teams met Real Salt Lake took an early 2-0 lead only to see the Whitecaps battle back for a 2-2 draw. Teibert said the Whitecaps will be playing with fire if they let Salt Lake take an early lead in the rematch. "They are a very possession-based side," he said. "They play their style of game very well. "They know what they are good at. They can pass through teams. Its important for us to really key in on that. It will be a great match." The Whitecaps recent struggles havent dented the teams confidence. "Were not trying to change for anybody," said Teibert. "We are always going to stick to our game plan. Some days it works, some days it doesnt. "We always want to be an exciting team to watch. We have a never-say-die attitude. We have a sense of togetherness. We believe we can go out and win games." He ended up in Chicago, and its working out in a big way. Schierholtz homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs, powering Jeff Samardzija and the Cubs to an 11-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Monday night. "Im just trying to put up good at-bats and help the team out," Schierholtz said. "Just try not to do too much. Just trying to keep it simple and go out there and have fun." Schierholtz connected for a three-run shot in the first and a two-run drive in the seventh in his fourth career multihomer game. He also had an RBI double in the third in Chicagos highest-scoring game since a 14-6 victory over Houston on June 23. He went 3 for 4 while moving into a tie with Anthony Rizzo for the team lead with 18 homers. He also is second only to Rizzo with 58 RBIs. Not bad for a journeyman outfielder who was non-tendered by Philadelphia after last season and agreed to a one-year deal with Chicago in late December. Id like to be part of the future here," said Schierholtz, who feared he might be traded before last months non-waiver deadline. "Im happy Im not out of here." Donnie Murphy added a pair of solo homers and Dioner Navarro had a three-run shot for the Cubs, who managed just 12 runs total in their previous eight home games. It was more than enough for Samardzija (7-11), who pitched a six-hitter for his second complete game of the season and No. 3 for his career. He struck out five and walked none in his first victory in a month. "Regardless of what I did out there, youve got to tip your hat to the offence," Samardzija said. "Puts you in the zone. Allows you to relax and throw your pitches. They were great out there." Wilson Ramos hit his eighth homer in the seventh, but that was it for Washington. Bryce Harper finished with two hits. Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (14-7) allowed a season-high eight runs in five innings in his first loss since July 26 against the New York Mets. The All-Star was 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in his previous three starts. "My stuffs been good all year," he said. "Fastballs been good, slider was good tonight. Just the location was off tonight and its something Ive got to work on." The three home runs matched a seasson high for Zimmermann, who is tied with St.dddddddddddd Louis ace Adam Wainwright for the NL lead with 14 wins. "Hes a tremendous pitcher, hes going to be fine," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "This was not good, obviously. But I think he came through it all right." The Nationals acquired outfielder David DeJesus in a pregame trade with the Cubs, but their fringe playoff hopes took a hit with their third loss in four games. They trail NL East-leading Atlanta by 16 games, but the most important number at this point is their 10 1/2-game deficit compared to Cincinnati in the race for the second NL wild-card slot. The acquisition of DeJesus gives Washington another veteran left-handed bat for their bench. The 33-year-old DeJesus hit .250 with six homers and 27 RBIs in 84 games with the Cubs, who began the day in last in the NL Central. DeJesus hit for Ryan Zimmerman in the eighth and received a warm ovation from the crowd of 31,290 on a beautiful night in Chicago. He popped out to shortstop and remained in the game to play centre field. "Im going to give it my all," said DeJesus, who merely had to move over to the visitors clubhouse at Wrigley Field to join to his new team. "Try and be a guy out there as a leader and a guy that young guys can learn from." The Cubs get a player to be named in the trade, but they also save about $2.5 million, including a $1.5 million buyout for a 2014 team option worth $6.5 million. General manager Jed Hoyer said the money was a "strong consideration." "We really like David a lot," Hoyer said. "Ive told his agent and Theo told David directly, wed be willing to talk to him about bringing him back at some point. Hes a good mentor for our younger guys." NOTES: Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo (illness) got the day off. Manager Dale Sveum said he hopes he will be ready for Tuesday nights game. ... The Cubs activated OF Brian Bogusevic (strained left hamstring) from the 15-day disabled list to take DeJesus roster spot, and general manager Jed Hoyer said OF Ryan Sweeney (broken left rib) likely will begin a rehab stint next week. ... The Nationals released OF Roger Bernardina to make room on their roster. Bernardina hit .178 in 85 games with Washington. ... Nationals RHP Dan Haren (7-11, 4.79 ERA) faces Cubs LHP Chris Rusin (2-2, 3.06 ERA) in the second game of the series. ' ' '

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Even with his best round of the year, Phil Mickelson knew it wouldnt be enough for him to stay in the lead Saturday at the Wells Fargo Championship. That was OK with Lefty. All he wanted was a chance at Quail Hollow, and Mickelson hasnt had a better chance to win all year. Mickelson roared into contention by playing a six-hole stretch in 7-under par on the front nine, and keeping bogeys off his card with a wedge that danced around the cup on the 18th for a 9-under 63. He was leading when he finished and wound up two shots behind J.B. Holmes, who overtook Martin Flores for the lead on the last hole. "I dont think Ill be leading at the end of the day because I think there are some birdies out there," Mickelson said. "But just to be in contention, and to have a chance at a golf course that Ive become so close to over the years, Im excited about tomorrows round." Holmes, pounding tee shots and gaining confidence along the way, had a 9-iron left on the 490-yard closing hole and made a 20-foot birdie putt from the fringe. That gave him a 6-under 66, and it made him the outright leader when Flores made his only big mistake of the round. Flores pulled his tee shot into the stream that winds along the left side of the 18th fairway. He at least gave himself a chance to save par, but missed a 20-foot putt and had to settle for a 69. Holmes goes into the final round with a shot at coming back from injuries, one of them far more noteworthy than the others. He had brain surgery in 2011 to remove a piece of his skull. Then, he broke his ankle in 2013, and time off allowed him to have surgery on his left elbow. And now he takes a one-shot lead into the final round at 13-under 203. "Ive worked really hard to get there and it would be a great accomplishment to come back and get a win in the bag," Holmes said. Flores feels the same way. His best finish in four seasons on the PGA Tour was a tie for fourth in the John Deere Classic last year, when he closed with a 63 and finished one shot out of a three-way playoff won by fellow Dallas resident Jordan Spieth. Flores describes himself as a flat-liner, and he played the part Saturday, the first time he ever played in the final group on the weekend. He never looked at a leaderboard because he figured it didnt matter on a Saturday. He didnt let adrenaline get the best of him when he rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt from just off the 12th green for his third straight birdie and a two-shot lead. He never came seriously close to a bogey until the 18th hole. And not even that bothered him. So when asked if he could be the winner Sunday, Flores shrugged and said, "Why not me?" "Ive been working really hard, feeling great about my game," he said. "Im going to go out there and attack. If I win, I win. If I dont, I dont. Im going to keep working until I do." Kevin Kisner had a 68 and was three shots behind. Justin Rose bogeyed his last hole for a 71 and was four shots back, along with Jason Bohn, who made three birdies over his last four holes for a 67. Former PGA champion Martin Kaymer bogeyed his last two holes for a 70 and was five behind. The last 54-hole leader to win at Quail Hollow was Anthony Kim in 2008. That could bode well for Mickelson, off to his worst start to a season in 11 years. Not since 2003 -- the last year he went winless on the PGA Tour -- has Mickelson gone this deep into a year without winning. Worse yet, he doesnt even have a top 10. He had to deal with a back injury in San Diego and an oblique muscle strain in Texas. He missed the cut at the Masters last month for the first time in 17 years. "I had a good round today, and it feels good because its been a rough year for me this year," Mickelson said. "I havent been healthy early on and I havent put it together. And to have a good round today, good round the first round, this is a good start." Mickelson said he didnt feel far off after his 75 on Friday, and he was right. He was helped by a couple of long birdie putts on the fourth and sixth holes, and by a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 seventh hole that revved up the crowd on a gorgeous day of sunshine. Rory McIlroy set the pace early for a day of low scoring with a 65 that brought back memories of 2010, when he made the cut on the number and went 66-62 to win for the first time on the PGA Tour. He was four shots behind that year going into Sunday. But with Holmes and Flores finishing strong, McIlroy goes into the last round seven shots behind. Cheap Air Jordan Online . Ryan Getzlaf certainly got them started in the second. Getzlaf scored the first two goals in the second, and Teemu Selanne scored the go-ahead goal late in the period as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Nashville Predators 4-3 Thursday night. Discount Air Jordan . "It feels good, Ive never had one before, not even in College," Hagelin said after the Rangers outgunned the Jets 4-2, behind some solid goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist following a pretty wide open first period. https://www.wholesalejordanshoeschina.com/. General manager David Poile called signing Ribeiro a great opportunity to add a talented, experienced and creative centre Tuesday when he introduced the veteran at a news conference. Ribeiros contract is worth $1.05 million after being bought out of the final three years of a $22 million contract by the Coyotes recently. Air Jordan Sale . -- Arizona came out of its last meeting with California a bit discombobulated, hurting from its first loss and the loss of forward Brandon Ashley for the rest of the season. Fake Jordan . He even addressed his group of relievers Sunday morning. Dustin McGowan made those worries a nonfactor, at least for a day. McGowan pitched three-hit ball for seven innings, Colby Rasmus hit a grand slam and Melky Cabrera added a two-run homer as the Blue Jays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2.The first round of the Madeira Islands Open was postponed after heavy fog prevented any play on the Santo da Serra course on Thursday. Play was abandoned at 5 p.m. local time, leaving organizers hopeful of starting the European Tours 1,500th tournament on Friday. While the capital Funchal was bathed in sunshine all day, visibility on the golff course, 700 metres (2,300 feet) above the city, was restricted to about 50 yards.dddddddddddd. "It is a very unusual mini ecosystem here at this venue, and, while many of the holes on the course further down the mountain are clear, unfortunately some are still under fog," tournament director Jose Maria Zamora said. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - It might have been the toughest $32 million Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever made. Marcos Maidana did everything Saturday night but beat Mayweather, taking him 12 tough rounds before losing a majority decision. Mayweather remained unbeaten, but not by much. Maidana swarmed all over him from the opening bell and gave him perhaps his toughest fight in a 16-year professional career. Cut over his eye and temporarily blinded by a head butt in the fourth round, Mayweather had to rally in the last half of the fight to avoid losing for the first time since he was beaten on a controversial decision in the 1996 Olympics. In the end, though, Mayweather got the win — just as he did in his previous 45 fights in a decision that was met with disbelief by Maidana and booed heavily by the crowd. He retained his welterweight title by winning 117-111 on one scorecard and 116-112 on another. A third judge had it even at 114-114. The Associated Press scored it for Mayweather 115-113. Maidana threw far more punches, but Mayweather was more accurate with his as the two battled into the late rounds with the fight still very much in doubt. Cheered on by a large contingent of Argentine fans, Maidana took the fight to Mayweather, who was cut by the right eye in the fourth round by an accidental head butt. "It was a tough, competitive fight," Mayweather said. "I normally like to go out there and box and move. But he put pressure on me. I wanted to give the fans what they wanted to see so I stood and fought him. Maidana raised his arms in victory when the final bell sounded, and Mayweather watched pensively from his corner as the scorecards were added up before he was declared the winner. "I think I won the fight," Maidana said. "He didnt fight like a man." Punch stats by Compubox showed Mayweather landing 230 of 426 punches to 221 of 858 for Maidana. It was the most punches landed by any fighter against Mayweather in 38 fights where punch stats were compiled. Maidana had a big lead in the early rounds through his constant aggression. But Mayweather won five of the last seven rounds on two scorecards and six of seven on a third to pull out the win by a narrow margin. "I couldnt see for two rounds after the head butt," Mayweather said. "After I could see again it didnt both me. Thats what champions do, they survive and adjust." Maidana had said before the fight he was going to treat Mayweather like any other fighter and go right after him. He did just that, bringing the sellout crowd at the MGM Grand hotel to its feet as he landed some big overhand right hands to the top of Mayweathers head. "He never hurt me with a punch," Maidana said. "He wasnt that tough, I thought I won." Maidana complained about being forced to fight with gloves he didnt want to use when the two camps engaged in a standoff over gloves at the rules meeting a day earlier. "If I would have had my gloves I would have knocked him out," Maidana said. "They took away my advantage." Mayweather, who earned $32 million for the fight, was a 6-1 favourite coming to remain unbeaten. He had picked Maidana as an opponent because Maidana beat Adrien Broner in an upset in December, but he almost made the wrong pick. Mayweather seemed confused early and unable to adapt to the wild punches thrown by Maidana. It wasnt until the middle rounds that he got into more of a rhythm, hitting Maidana with hooks to the body and right punches to the head. Still, the fight was in doubt late as Maidana wouldnt quit coming forward. With the crowd on its feet in the final round he tried to land big punches, but Mayweather was able to escape most of them. Maidana, who was cheered by the crowd as he left the ring, said he wanted a rematch, and both promoter Richard Schaefer and Mayweather said he just might get one after nearly pulling off one of the biggest upsets in recent years. "If the fans want to see it again, lets do it again," Mayweather said. Woods birdied the par-5 15th to open a two-stroke lead, hitting a wedge from about 120 yards to 4 feet.SAN FRANCISCO - Homer Bailey heard frequent reminders that he had a no-hit bid in progress. Not anyone on the Cincinnati bench mentioned it, however. "I wasnt really thinking about it, other than the fan just above our dugout who kept yelling at me about it," Bailey said. "That was nice of him." Bailey made a strong bid for yet another no-hitter, shutting down San Francisco until Buster Poseys two-out single in the seventh inning and pitching the Reds past the Giants 4-0 Sunday. Bailey has thrown no-hitters in each of the last two seasons, and did it against the Giants at home last July 2. He came close to pitching the latest gem at AT&T Park — the ballpark was the scene of Tim Lincecums no-hitter Wednesday against San Diego. "I had pretty good stuff, got a lot of early outs and we scored enough runs," Bailey said. "It was our lucky day, I guess." Bailey (8-4) finished with a three-hitter as the Reds completed their first four-game sweep in San Francisco since 1972 at Candlestick Park. Billy Hamilton, Brandon Phillips, Brayan Pena and Skip Schumaker drove in runs as the Reds won their season-best fifth straight and eighth in nine overall. The Giants were swept in a four-game series for the first time in their ballpark that opened in 2000. San Francisco has lost 15 of 19 while watching its lead dwindle in the NL West. "We got them at the right time," Schumaker said. "Its still a playoff team, in my opinion. They are too good of a team. Im just happy to get out of here while they were struggling a little bit." Bailey walked one and struck out seven in his fourth career shutout and sixth complete game. Bailey walked Gregor Blanco leading off the fourth, but later caught him taking off early for third base and threw him out. That was all the Giants got into Posey singled cleanly to right-centre field. Pablo Sandovals bloop single moved Posey to third, but Bailey struck out Michael Morse looking to end the inning. "We ran into four starters as dominant as four starters Ive ever seen before," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "They caught everything we hit. They are as hot as any team, and as cold as we are, its what we have to deal with.dddddddddddd" Bailey was trying to become just the sixth pitcher with at least three career no-hitters. Nolan Ryan leads that list with seven. "He pitched efficiently and we played great defence," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "When the outs are coming so early in the count, he has a chance." Tim Hudson (7-5) allowed two runs on five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. Hes lost his last two starts at home after opening the season with seven straight wins. "My delivery felt a lot better and my timing was good," Hudson said. "They had one or two opportunities to score and they took advantage. I felt like I made a pretty good pitch on Hamilton. Every little run counts in a game like this." Hamiltons two-out double in the third drove in the Reds first run, and with the way Hudson was pitching — he retired 12 of 13 following the double — Bailey needed to be nearly perfect. The Reds tacked on three runs in the ninth against Jeremy Affledt, who took over for Hudson after Todd Frazier started the frame with a single. Affledt balked, hit a batter, threw a wild pitch, allowed three hits and an inherited runner to score and got his only out on Phillips sacrifice fly. WINNIPEG -- Dustin Byfugliens versatility is proving to be highly valuable to the Winnipeg Jets. Byfuglien, who was moved to forward from defence earlier this month but sometimes plays both positions in a game, scored the winner in a 5-4 overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. The six-foot-five Byfuglien took a pass from captain Andrew Ladd and fired a wrist shot over goalie Jonathan Berniers glove 2:44 into the extra frame for his 12th goal of the season. "They (the Leafs) backed off a little bit," Byfuglien said. "They didnt know we were trying to regroup type of thing. "It was tough for them, but I just got the puck on the net." Rookie Mark Scheifele, defenceman Zach Bogosian and both Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little on the power play scored for the Jets, who outshot the Leafs 31-27 after regulation play and 32-28 following overtime. Little also had an assist and Ladd added two assists for Winnipeg (24-24-5). Toronto (27-21-6) got a power-play goal from defenceman Dion Phaneuf, centre Troy Bodie scored his second of the season and defenceman Tim Gleason marked his first goal of the year. Jets coach Paul Maurice said Byfugliens versatility is a big plus for the team. "Its a huge, huge luxury," Maurice said. "It makes us run our bench. It makes my pairs right coming off the bench up front. You get all your best offensive players on the ice that way." Byfuglien was moved to forward by former coach Claude Noel in his last game before he was fired and replaced by Maurice on Jan. 12. The Jets are 5-1 under Maurice, but they let a 4-1 second-period lead get away that seemed a little reminiscent of the past. Phil Kessel tied the game 4-4 with 1:33 left in the third period on a sharp-angled shot that beat goalie Ondrej Pavelec. "I know the scoring progression is going to say we blew a 4-1 lead, but I didnt feel we didnt generate anything and that they were all over us," Maurice said. "They had some flurries, they have some real good players. And we had some great chances, too." Little said his team didnt lose its confidence as the scoreboard shifted. "Its never fun when you start to let a team back in the game," Little said. "When they scored that fourth (goal), I tell you we handled it real well. We stayed pretty level-headed. Even if it took longer than 60 minutes, I thought we felt we were going to get the job done." Pavelec stop 24 of the 28 shots he faced. James Reimer started for the Leafs, but let in four goals on 18 shots and was replaced by Bernier midway through the second period. Bernier stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced. "We felt that it would be the decision to let a guy play in his hometown," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said of the decision to go with Reimer, who was born in Morweena, Man. The Jets went up 2-0 early in the first period after scoring on their first and fourth shots of the game. Toronto coughed up the puck in its own end and Jets forward Evander Kane got it and sent a pass to Scheifele. Reimer got a piece of Scheifeles shot, but not enough as the Jets went up 1-0 at 3:10 on the rookies 10th goal of the season. Winnipeg made good on its first power play of the game, courtesy of a hooking penalty on Leafs defenceman Morgan Reilly. Pavelec got things started with a pass out to defenceman Jacob Trouba, who then sent the puck to Wheeler just outside Torontos blue-line. Wheeler raced in alone on Reimer and put a shot through his pads at 6:34. "Obviously, the first two goals were goals that I thought that were scored in the middle of the net and those are tough ones," Carlyle said. "I contemplated whether to do something at that point, but I felt get him through the period and give him an opportunity to fight and battle himself back. "And then he did that because he came out in the second period and made some big stops. He made a stop on a breakaway. He battled hard for our hockey club." A five-goal second period saw each team scoring twice in a span of 3:01. The Leafs used a power play for Phaneufs fifth goal of the season, a long one-timer straight at the net through traffic at 6:13 while Jets defenceman Keaton Ellerby was in the box for boarding. Littles 17th goal of the season came just over a minute later as he redirected a shot by Toby Enstrom to make it 3-1. Bogosians shot 37 seconds later beat a partially screened Reimer and sent the goalie to the bench in favour of Bernier, who entered his 100th career game with his team down 4-1. "Well, it was more mercy because one was a deflection and the another one was posted in," Carlyle said. "We just needed a little bit of a change." Toronto made it 4-2 on Bodies goal 61 seconds later at 9:14 and then made it a one-goal deficit at 16:44 when Gleasons shot hit Trouba and went through Pavelecs pads. James van Riemsdyk assisted on Kessels goal and saw a silver lining in falling just short of a successful comeback. "We got down and were able to battle back and showed character," van Riemsdyk said. "But again, well take the point." Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys . Hahn (5-2) allowed a run and three hits, struck out six and walked four in his seventh major league start. The 24-year-old right-hander has a 1.46 ERA over his last six outings since Pittsburgh beat him 4-1 on June 3 in his big league debut at Petco Park. Padres right-hander Blaine Boyer took over for Hahn, giving up a leadoff double to Drew Butera and a walk to Carl Crawford. That ended Boyers season-opening string of 26 consecutive plate appearances by right-handed batters without a hit or a walk -- the longest such streak since STATS LLC. began tracking data in 1974. First-time All-Star Yasiel Puig chased Boyer with an RBI double, the first run off him this season in 14 innings. Adrian Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly against Alex Torres, but Quentin turned it into an inning-ending double play by throwing to third baseman Chase Headley for the tag on the over-aggressive Puig after Dee Gordon crossed the plate. Joaquin Benoit escaped an eighth-inning jam, striking out Juan Uribe and Miguel Rojas with runners at second and third and retiring Crawford on a fielders choice grounder with the bases loaded after a full-count walk to pinch-hitter A.J. Ellis. Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save in 25 chances. Quentin, who entered Friday batting .165 with 14 RBIs in 42 games, hit an RBI double in the fifth off Dan Haren and extended the Padres lead to 6-1 in the sixth with a bases-loaded two-run single against Jamey Wright. The three RBIs gave the Padres left fielder two more than he had in his previous 34 at-bats combined. The Dodgers thirdd loss in four games, coupled with San Franciscos 5-0 win over Arizona, dropped the defending NL West champions into a virtual tie with the Giants for the division lead.dddddddddddd Haren (8-6) gave up four runs and six hits in his third start against the Padres and second loss to them in three weeks, throwing 102 pitches in four-plus innings. He came in 4-1 with a 2.96 ERA in his eight previous home starts this year. Matt Kemp opened the scoring in the Dodgers first with an RBI single, but the Padres responded in the second with Amaristas third home run after Will Venable reached on a strikeout-wild pitch past Butera. Haren has allowed 19 homers -- tying the Padres Eric Stults for second-most in the NL behind the 27 served up by Milwaukees Marco Estrada. The Padres increased the margin to 4-1 with two runs in the fifth. Headley, whose homer in Thursdays series opener ended Clayton Kershaws string of 41 consecutive scoreless innings, drove in Seth Smith from first base with a double. Quentin followed with another double on Harens 103rd and final pitch. CHICAGO -- Yadier Molina had a simple goal for his ninth-inning at-bat with the bases loaded and the score tied on Sunday. "I was looking not to strike out," he said. After fouling off some tough two-strike pitches, Molina hit a ground-ball single up the middle to drive in two runs and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped out of an offensive funk with a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. "I got a little lucky that they were playing me to pull," Molina said. "It was a good at-bat. I was able to put the ball in play and good things happened." The defending National League champions had lost four of five to fall a game below .500. The Cardinals scored all their runs with two outs. Molina, moved into the No. 2 spot to jump start the lineup, was 0 for 4 before coming through in the ninth. But it was a wild pitch in the seventh inning that allowed the Cubs to tie the score at 3 that had Molina more frustrated. The pitch from reliever Carlos Martinez was in the dirt and trickled through Molinas legs, allowing Luis Valbuena to score. "I was there," Molina said. "I dont know. Its one of those things. I was ready for it and the ball still goes through my legs." Kevin Siegrist (1-1) got the win in relief, while Trevor Rosenthal picked up his eighth save in as many opportunities despite a scare in the ninth inning. Hector Randon (0-1) took the loss for the Cubs, who were attempting to win four straight games for the first time since July. While Cardinals manager Mike Matheny had looked for Molina, one of his hottest hitters, to get the offence going, it was a couple of struggling batters at the bottom of the lineup that got things started early. With two outs in the second inning and Jhonny Peralta on first base, Randal Grichuk drilled a triple into the right-centre field gap for a 1-0 lead. Mark Ellis, who went 3 for 4, followed with a double to left-centre to make it 2-0. Both Grichuk (.167) and Ellis (.143) entered hitting well below .200. St. Louis stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third as Matt Adams doubled home Matt Holiday. The Cubs pulled within 3-2 in the fourth with some clutch two-out hitting. With one out, Ryan Kalish singled and John Baker walked. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Cubs starter Jason Hammel singled to right to drive in both. Molinas go-ahead single to centre came on the sixth pitch of the at-bat from Randon. "I thought I made a good pitch today, but something happened," Randon said. Molina seemed more relieved that the wild pitch wasnt a factor than he drove in the game-deciding runs. "(Molina) does a good job of not wearing his emotions and how frustrating that is for him," Matheny said. "Its hard to count the number of balls he keeps in front of him, the number of runs he saves. Its something we dont take for granted." Valbuena doubled in a run with two outs in the ninth to make it 5-4, but Rosenthal got Anthony Rizzo to ground out to end the game. "Guys kept grinding it out," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "We just fell a little short." NOTES: The ESPN broadcast team of Dan Shulman and John Kruk worked from the bleachers. ... The Bulls also clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs with Brooklyn falling to Atlanta. They trailed by 56-38 at the half after getting dominated inside by Andre Drummond but turned things around in a big way after that. Chicago outscored Detroit 32-24 in the third quarter to pull within 10 and went on a 15-0 run in the fourth to turn an eight-point deficit into a 90-83 edge. The Bulls then hung on in the closing minutes for their 35th win since Jan. 1 — tops in the Eastern Conference. Rodney Stuckey scored 22 points and Brandon Jennings added 17 but the Pistons lost for the 18th time in 20 road games. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland Athletics owner Lew Wolff said Wednesday the club has reached a 10-year lease agreement with the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority to stay at the Oakland Coliseum. The deal that would run through 2025 is subject to approval by the Coliseum Joint Powers Authority, which is scheduled to vote on the extension Friday. The City of Oakland and Alameda County Board of Supervisors also would have to approve the deal. Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig commended both sides for reaching a deal on a lease extension, while offering, "I continue to believe that the Athletics need a new facility and am fully supportive of the clubs view that the best site in Oakland is the Coliseum site." "We very much appreciate Commissioner Seligs support for Oakland to be the home of the As," coliseum authority Chairman Nate Miley added in a statement. "We also agree, and we believe the As do as well, that long-term the Coliseum is the best site for them in the East Bay." Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said Wednesday that the city is working to make sure the team remains in Oakland for years to come. "We are still negotiating, so were surprised by the announcement of an agreement," Quan said. "We plan to meet tomorrow, continue negotiations, and hope there will be an agreement soon." The two-time defending AL West champion Athletics are still hoping for a new stadium, but Wolff said a proposed site near Oaklands popular Jack London Square neighbourhood has proved not to be a feasible option. "Howard Terminal as a potential ballpark site has been and is totally rejected by MLB and the As," Wolff said in an email to The Associated Press. Selig reiterated that in a statement Wednesday. He has long supported Wolffs efforts to build a stadium, but hasnt ruled whether the As can move into the San Francisco Giants territory in technology-rich Silicon Valley and San Jose. "Contrary to what some have suggested, the committee that has studied this issue did not determine that the Howard Terminal site was the best location for a new facility in Oakland," Selig said. The rundown Coliseum has had multiple sewage problems in the past year and an outage affecting the outfield lights against the New York Yankees on June 14. Despite the As recent on-field success, they are currently 24th in the majors in attendance with an average of 23,462 per game. "Its not something I think much about, to be honest," Oakland first baseman Brandon Moss said in New York, where the As were set to play the Mets. "Obviously, everyone knows that its well-documented, the history of the Coliseum and the things that theyve dealt with in the past few years. But honestly, as players who play in it every single night, we dont come in and say, God, we wish we had a new stadium! Obviously we do, but at the same time we understand that thats our home and thats where we play and its our job to go out and perform regardless of where we are." The Coliseum is the only stadium in the United States still used as the home for an NFL and MLB team. The Raiders are in the final year of their lease at the Coliseum and are interested in building a new stadium at the site. While the As deal is expected to contain "out clauses" for both sides, it could complicate the Raiders desire for a new stadium. Dan Frawley Jersey . PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius was not suffering from a mental illness when he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and was able to understand the wrongfulness of what he had done, according to psychiatric reports submitted Monday at the Olympic athletes murder trial. The conclusions by a panel of experts, read aloud by chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel, appeared to remove the possibility that the double-amputee runner could be declared not guilty because of a mental disorder, which would result in his being committed to a mental institution. The court-ordered evaluation was conducted during a one-month break in the trial, after a psychiatrist testifying for the defence, Dr. Merryll Vorster, said that Pistorius had an anxiety disorder that may have contributed to the shooting in his home in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013. Pistorius said he feels vulnerable because of his disability and long-held worry about crime, Vorster noted. Nel had requested an independent inquiry into Pistorius state of mind, suggesting that the defence might argue that the athlete was not guilty because of mental illness. The examination was conducted at a state psychiatric hospital by a psychologist and three psychiatrists. On Monday, Nel announced the findings when the trial resumed. However, he quoted only briefly from the conclusions, and the entire reports were not publicly released, raising questions about what else they contained. Pistorius has testified that he fired through a closed bathroom door, killing Steenkamp, in the mistaken belief there was a dangerous intruder in his home. The prosecution has alleged that Pistorius, 27, killed 29-year-old Steenkamp after a Valentines Day argument. Pistorius faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder, and could also face years in prison if convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing. HHe is free on bail.dddddddddddd Later Monday, defence lawyer Barry Roux called surgeon Gerald Versfeld, who amputated Pistorius lower legs when he was 11 months old, to testify about the runners disability and the difficulty and pain he endured while walking or standing on his stumps. Pistorius was born without fibulas, the slender bones that run from below the knee to the ankle. At Rouxs invitation, Judge Thokozile Masipa and her two legal assistants left the dais to closely inspect Pistorius stumps. The athlete was on his stumps when he killed Steenkamp, and his defence team has argued that he was more likely to try to confront a perceived danger than to flee because of his limited ability to move without prosthetic limbs. Versfeld testified that Pistorius disability made him "vulnerable in a dangerous situation." During cross-examination, Nel questioned the surgeons objectivity and raised the possibility that Pistorius could have run away from a perceived danger on the night of the shooting. He also said Pistorius rushed back to his bedroom after the shooting and made other movements that indicated he was not as hampered as Versfeld was suggesting. Roux, the chief defence lawyer, also called acoustics expert Ivan Lin to testify about the challenges of hearing something accurately from a distance. Neighbours have said in court that they heard a woman screaming on the night Pistorius shot Steenkamp, which could bolster the prosecutions claim that the couple were arguing before Pistorius opened fire. The defence, however, has suggested the witnesses were actually hearing the high-pitched screams of a distraught Pistorius after he realized he had shot Steenkamp. At times during the trial, Pistorius has sobbed and retched violently, prompting the judge to call adjournments. On Monday, Pistorius was calm and took notes during testimony. ' ' '

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Defending champions Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova were upset in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Monday. First, Sharapova went down to qualifier Camila Giorgi, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, giving the young Italian her first victory over a top-five player. Then, Nadal followed on the main stadium court, losing 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) to Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine. Nadal staged a furious rally in the third. He won three straight games, including a break of Dolgopolov, to tie it at 5. Both players held serve to send the match into the tiebreaker. They slugged it out from the baseline accompanied by a noisy soundtrack, with fans yelling and cheering. Los Angeles Lakers star Pau Gasol watched nervously from Nadals box. Nadal led 4-2 before Dolgopolov won three straight points to take a 5-4 lead. The Ukrainian hit two forehand winners and came up with a big service winner. "I had enough breaks to win the match, but I didnt play enough well from the baseline then to be solid with my serve," Nadal said. "I didnt go for the points. I played with too many mistakes." Nadal evened it at 5-all, but he hit the ball long to set up match point. Dolgopolov served what he thought was an ace, but it was called out. He challenged the call and it showed the ball barely missed tagging the T. Dolgopolov put his second serve into play and produced a cross-court forehand that the worlds top-ranked player couldnt return. "Its a moment for the people to be proud a little bit for someone from their country," Dolgopolov said, referring to the political upheaval going on between Ukraine and Russia. "Its good to make some results and make the people forget a little bit and have some happy moments in the news." Dolgopolov had more errors (49) than winners (36). Last month, Nadal defeated Dolgopolov to win the Rio de Janeiro title. The Ukrainian has risen quickly in the ATP Tour rankings, going from No. 57 to 31st after a strong February, posting three wins against top-20 players in Rio and made the semifinals in Acapulco. Before Nadal was sent packing, Sharapova committed 58 errors in her first loss to a player ranked outside the top 30 since Wimbledon last year. "Shes someone that doesnt give you much rhythm," Sharapova said. "Shes quite aggressive, but some shots she hits incredible for a long period of time. Sometimes they go off a bit. If Im speaking about my level, it was nowhere near where it should have been." Ranked 79th in the world, Giorgi made it through qualifying to play Indian Wells for the first time. She improved to 3-2 against top-10 opponents. The 22-year-old led 4-2 in the final set, but Sharapova broke Giorgi twice to tie it at 5. "I was trying to just play my game, and maybe I accelerate more than the other set," Giorgi said. "I just play more aggressive." Giorgi then broke Sharapova at love before serving out the match, overcoming her 11th double fault to set up match point. Giorgi had 48 unforced errors and 24 winners. Awaiting Giorgi in the fourth round will be fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta, who beat No. 16 seed Sam Stosur 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. American Sloane Stephens was to play Ana Ivanovic, and Tommy Haas took on Kei Nishikori of Japan in night matches. Tied 4-all in the third, Sharapova was broken when her forehand was called long and Sharapova raised her arms. The chair umpire took the gesture to mean Sharapova was challenging the call, and the call showed the ball was out. Sharapova argued she was only throwing her arms up as if to ask, "Who made the call?" But the umpire disagreed, and Sharapova retreated to her sideline chair trailing 5-4. Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka routed 29th-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-0, 6-2. Andy Murray outlasted Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 in his second straight three-set match, and four-time tourney champion Roger Federer defeated 27th-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2) with an ace on match point. Murray had 47 of the 99 unforced errors during the nearly three-hour match in the 80-plus-degree heat of the Southern California desert. The third set featured six service breaks, with Murray taking the last two. Top-seeded Li Na defeated Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4. Ken Boyer Cardinals Jersey .D. Now comes an off-season of questions about manager Matt Williams decisions and a handful of key roster choices, including what to do about Ryan Zimmerman, whether to sign Jordan Zimmermann and Ian Desmond to long-term deals, and how to upgrade an offence that fell flat in October.Maybe we need to start calling it "Kassian Karma." Whenever Matt Kassian plays, the Ottawa Senators seem to pick up points and when the winger isnt in the lineup, they have struggled. The Sens forward has dressed for roughly half of the games this season and the contrasting record when he is in and out of the lineup is rather remarkable. They have lost only three times in regulation out of the 24 games that Kassian has been a part of, posting a 13-3-8 record. But when Kassian doesnt play, they have a woeful 8-16-1 record in 25 games. On Monday, I approached Kassian to see if he was aware of the teams outstanding record with him in the lineup. "Yeah I knew," Kassian said immediately. "When you are a guy who goes in and out of the lineup, you pay attention to things like that. You want to be a guy that, when youre in the lineup, the team has success. Its been fortunate for me that so far we have." The simple explanation would be that perhaps the Senators skilled forwards feel like they have a little more room to operate on a night when Kassian is sitting on their bench. Maybe the opposition is a little less inclined to take liberties with Ottawa players if they have to answer to Kassian. But even Kassian agrees that is likely an oversimplification of the situation. "There are probably more factors to it than just that," he said. "You hope its because the team has an identity where theyre going to go out and play and just get things done and maybe give them some confidence. Thats what you hope for." Other Sens players cant necessarily identify the phenomenon, either. "I dont know the real reason for it, other than weve timed our games well and hes played well when hes played," explains captain Jason Spezza. "Hes a guy that when he plays, hes a physical presence out there. He understands his role and hes done a really good job of just keeping things simple when he plays. But its also strange that Ottawas record would be so good with Kassian in the lineup, considering he hardly sees the ice when he plays. He averages 4:23 of ice-time per game – although that number has been slightly north of six minutes per game in the month of January. In a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs in December, Kassian played just 1:05 and followed that up with just 2:20 of ice time in the next game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Remarkably, the Sens picked up three out of a possible four points in those games.dddddddddddd. "It depends on the night. Some of those nights where I havent played there have been a lot of penalties and special teams – and I dont play on special teams. Instantly, that cuts it down," says Kassian. "And the guys who need to play 5-on-5 are your big guys, so there could be some weird nights like that. Especially at the start of the season when we basically had a parade to the penalty box." It turns out that Kassians limited ice time may actually benefit the other 11 forwards, who often see increased ice time on those nights. While many people like to see their team roll four lines consistently, it appears as though this years edition of the Sens seem to thrive on the nights when they are playing with three-and-a-half lines. "Its better for me. I prefer when I play more, I think I play better," said Spezza. "If you play more when hes in the lineup, that might help everybody a little bit. But he really understands his role and he does a good job. He gets some good shifts early in the game and if they shorten the bench, hes fine with it I think." There is also the matter of the Senators being a perfect 5-0-0 when Kassian drops the gloves and fights this season. "I would expand on that and say look at our teams record as a whole when we fight, whether its me or someone else," said Kassian. "That might just be preparedness and being engaged in the game as a team – not just me as an individual. When were aggressive and ready to play, when were ready to fight – not that you have to – those are the games that were more invested in emotionally." For the record, the Sens are 5-5-1 in games when someone other than Kassian gets into a fight. So once again, the "Kassian Karma" seems to be in effect when it comes to this realm as well. In any event, Kassian cant put his finger on exactly why his team is so much more successful when he plays and when he fights – although he is hoping his rugged style does rub off on his teammates. "You hope its a general identity and an attitude the team has that you help them with when youre in the lineup and thats the reason," said Kassian. The Sens are back in action on Tuesday night when they visit the Washington Capitals, a team theyve enjoyed recent mastery over, having won their last six encounters. You can catch all the action live on TSN at 7pm et/4pm pt. ' ' '

NEW ORLEANS -- With a quick step to his left, Anthony Davis bolted from the man he was supposed to guard and launched himself toward the backboard in time to swat away Ty Lawsons driving layup. As the crowd erupted, Davis knocked the ball off the glass and back into his hands. With 1:14 to go in overtime, Davis sixth block also became his 17th rebound. That, along with his 32 points -- which tied a career high -- proved too much for Denver to overcome, and the Pelicans held on for their third straight victory, 111-107 on Sunday night. "I dont think I was supposed to (guard Lawson)," Davis said of his pivotal block. "I just tried to make a basketball play. Coach (Monty Williams) tells us all the time, If youre going to do something like that, you better go get it. Thank God I got the rebound. It got us hyped and it was a play that we needed down the stretch." Williams was delighted and amused by the play because of how it fit the theme of pregame banter he had overheard between Davis and his teammates. "Its funny because they were just talking about before the game how he wanted to just go up and grab it out of the air like Patrick Ewing used to," Williams said. "I was like, What are you guys talking about? Where is this conversation going? And then he makes a play like that, so it shows you how much I know." For Davis, it was one last historic performance before hes old enough to legally accept someones offer to buy him a drink for all hes done in less than two seasons of basketball in the Big Easy. Since the Pelicans were founded as the Charlotte Hornets in 1988, no one had racked up as many points, rebounds and blocks in the same game as Davis did against Denver. "Thats a testament to my team. Theyre giving me the ball where I can score and cutting hard so their man cant help, making big shots, playing defence, having my back if I try to go block a shot, boxing out and letting me get the rebounds," said Davis, who turns 21 on Tuesday. "It all goes to the team and not just me. I cant do it by myself." Indeed, Davis pointed out that his overtime heroics, which included four crucial free throws, never would have happed if not for teammates like Anthony Morrow, whose 14 points included a 15-foot pullup in the lane that tied the game at 94 with 1 second left in regulation. Morrow had to save a ball tipped away from Davis, then had to get off a shot over the taller Lawson. "Hes a great defender. He was up under me, so I just wanted to make sure I got to where I wanted to get to and just knocked the 15-footer down," Morrow said. Tyreke Evans, meanwhile, added 20 points, his fifth straight game with 20 or more. Kenneth Faried had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Denver, which had won its previous two games and led by as many as 16 in the second quarter. Aaron Brooks scored 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, nearly rescuing Denver from its collapse. After being up by as many as 13 points early in the second half, Denver had fallen behind by seven in the fourth quarter before Brooks scored six straight on three free throws and a transition 3-pointer. Later, his clutch, weaving drive around Davis for a scoop off the glass put Denver in front 94-90 with 1:20 left. But Brian Roberts free throws, followed by Morrows clutch jumper, sent the game to overtime. "It wasnt the end, it was the third quarter. We let them get back in the game," Faried said. "Its something about us and this team this year. We dont have that killer instinct quite yet." There were nine lead changes in the overtime thriller between two teams well out of playoff contention, but playing with pride. Davis deep offensive rebound and assist on Morrows 3 made it 100-98, and Davis exuberantly held three fingers in the air as the ball went down, only to see Lawson convert a quick three-point play on a driving layup as he was fouled to give Denver the lead right back. Roberts followed with a jumper for New Orleans, then Wilson Chandler nailed a 3 to put the Nuggets back up by two. Evans layup tied it for the eighth and final time at 104 before Davis free throws gave New Orleans the lead for good. Lawson finished with 15 points, Chandler with 14 and JJ Hickson 12 for the Nuggets, who outshot New Orleans 47.1 per cent (40 of 85) to 45.6 per cent (41 of 90), but hurt themselves 27 turnovers. "Weve just got to do a better job of taking care of the ball, and our role mentality, the things we talk about when youre playing your role -- fundamentally, boxing out and doing the things that we need to do to win this type of game," Denver coach Brian Shaw said. NOTES: Davis has surpassed 20 points and 10 rebounds in a game 22 times this season, and he has 30 double-doubles. ... Beckenbauer refused "repeated requests for his assistance, including requests that he provide information during an in-person interview or in response to written questions provided in both English and German," FIFA said in a statement.1) Sergio Aguero is making a case to be this years Luis Suarez. The Argentine has masked subpar team play through spectacular individual performance. Agueros brace was catalyst in a 4-1 away win at Sunderland. Two minutes after Connor Wickham gave Sunderland the lead, Aguero made Santiago Vergini look a pylon, going between the legs before a thundering blast, bringing the back netting up from the ground. It was a trademark quick-trigger strike that has made Aguero the most dangerous man in the Premier League. His second goal came on a near post run that was equal in quality as finish. He also added an assist, taking his tally to 14 goals and three assists through 14 games. Hes undeniably the Premier Leagues best player thus far. Aguero is now in the conversation among the top players in the world. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are top two. Aguero is somewhere in the second tier, with the likes of Neymar, Arjen Robben, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, etc. Perhaps a more convincing case could be made if Aguero had remained healthy through Argentinas World Cup campaign. The good news for City, health issues havent been an issue as hes featured in every league match. Aguero has been outstanding, yet remains off the blistering pace set by Suarez last season. After missing the five games through suspension, Suarez scored 19 in his first 14. He ended with 31. Suarez was relied upon for Liverpool to remain in the title race, just as Aguero is at present time. With Vincent Kompany (hamstring) and David Silva (knee) yet to return from injury, the onus falls on Agueros shoulders. It is time for the rest of his City teammates to step up. 2) Are Chelsea as the new Invincibles? While they remain undefeated after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Spurs, Im still not buying they will go undefeated. Chelsea are solid and organized, but not without flaws. Jose Mourinho has refused to rotate his squad, meaning heavy minutes logged by many team members. Seven players have started every league match, including three of the four defenders. Cesar Azpilicueta is the other defender and has started 12. 11 players have started nine games or more, with only 18 players seeing minutes. Mourinho is fortunate his team has remained incredibly healthy. This will not continue. Mourinho will have to rotate his squad. And when he does, the team will inevitably slip. The lack of squad rotation this far is a calculated risk. The hope is early points will allow further rotation later as potential important FA Cup and Champions League matches build. So far, so good. 3) Chelsea play the 4-2-3-1 to near perfection. Consistency in system has turned this group into one that doesnt make mistakes and punish those made by others. Gary Cahill gave up a rare chance against Spurs, careless in possession. Harry Kane failed to capitalize. Moments later, Eden Hazard played a textbook one-two with Didier Drogba. Aaron Lennon and Vlad Chiriches fell asleep. 1-0. Three minutes later, Hugo Lloris made a meal of his clearance. A quick touch to Oscar who played a wonderful through-ball to Drogba. 2-0. Game over. Chelseas superior defensive rotation, with the 10-man unit in unison has been an impenetrable wall. Only 11 goals conceded is a testament to team maturity and patience. The formation may not be sexy, but its effective. 4) Mauricio Pochettino left a good situation at Southampton to go to White Hart Lane where expectations are high and the talent questionable. The transition hasnt been smooth. Pochettino seems unsure on how to best utilize the talent in his squad. Through 14 games, he still hasnt a clue how to best deploy his back four. Up front, Roberto Saldado was relegated to the bench Wednesday, after a goal last time out. Nacer Chadli, back from injury, should have gone from the start. And why Paulinho continues to come off the bench is puzzling. Pochettino has some nice players. Perhaps not a top-four side, but certainly better than what Pochettinos getting out of them. All the meanwhile, Spurs are without a win at Stamford Bridge since 1990. Embarrassing. 5) Arsenal are the new Heartbreak Kids. The Gunners scored for the seventh time in the final five minutes of a game this season to get past Southampton, 1-0. Credit the team for the last gasp goals, but leaving it late is also an indication of team struggles. Nothing has come easy. The short-comings are plain to see. But yet again, Alexei Sanchez puts on his cape and comes to the rescue. His ninth of the league season was a similar read; Sanchez the saviour after Arsenal superior in possession, while not creating nearly enough genuine goal scoring opportunities and poor in front of goal. Arsenal deserved no more than a point. Toby Alderweireld going off (hamstring) in the 84th, leaving Southampton with 10-men having already made three substitutions was the turning point. Arsenal remains sixth in the table, which seems fraudulent considering how much work is left to do. Lets see how a busy December plays out for this inconsistent outfit. 6) The lost-look on Ronald Koemans face said it all. Southampton was hugely unlucky. Back-to-back weeks with innocent looking injuries the downfall. Last week it was Morgan Schneiderlin, the teams most important player, leaving at halftime (thigh) while deadlocked with Manchester City. They lost 3-0 after the re-shuffle. Jack Cork (knock) going off in the first half at Arsenal was a huge blow, changing the flow of the game.dddddddddddd And Alderweirelds untimely injury sealed Southamptons fate. Koeman isnt blessed with great depth. James Ward-Prowse (ankle/foot) remains out as well. The current stretch is as tough as it gets. Manchester United are next this Monday. All this makes the 1-1 draw last week with Aston Villa that much more damning. 7) There is an argument to be made Southamptons Fraser Forster should be Englands top keeper. Forster was outstanding at the Emirates, outstanding in positioning and shot-stopping. Southampton has conceded the fewest goals (10), Forster has the most shutouts (7) and top GAA (0.71). We all know the track record of Joe Hart. Forster can be considered a superior option. 8) Just because Marouane Fellaini scored doesnt mean he played well. Fellaini scored his first Old Trafford goal in Manchester Uniteds 2-1 win over Stoke City. For all Fellaini does well, he lacks the top quality demanded at United. His headed goal is testament to his ability to get forward and use his size. The rest of his game is thoroughly average. His misjudgment on the ball, turned phantom neck injury, directly led to Steven Nzonzis goal. Too frequently Fellainis touch lets him down or leads to poor decision-making and distribution. His positional sense is non-existent, unreliable in attack and defending. Antonio Valencia couldnt get forward with regularity due to Fellainis unpredictable ways down the right. United will not get better with Fellaini being a regular. More is demanded in intelligent ball movement. Thats what they need to aspire to. Fellaini is no more than a player to be brought on to change the flow of the game. Hes a disrupter. Thats all. 9) Michael Carrick is Manchester Uniteds most important player. There is no denying his influence as United has won the last four games, the only four games he has started. His composure on the ball and superior ability to read the game has settled the team and kept the group organized. Carrick completed the most passes (104) over the weekend and remains the only consistent in Uniteds midfield. Stoke tried to limit Carricks influence by putting a defensive player on him at all times. This allowed Juan Mata to have his best game of the season, free to roam and find space. 10) There is nothing wrong with Robin Van Persie. The critics insist the Dutchman has lost a step. While that may be true, there are few better strikers in the Prem. The issue has been a lack of service. Uniteds meddling midfield needs to get him more involved. Van Persie made a number of intelligent runs and/or found space against Stoke and his teammates failed to provide service. This is unacceptable. Hes a volume player who requires to be brought into the match. His goal Saturday against Hull serves as reminder what happens when you get him the ball. He had the most touches of the season that game. Feed the target-man and reap the benefits. 11) Steven Gerrard has now scored against 33 different Premier League teams, tallying in Liverpools 3-1 win over Leicester City. It was a rare goal from open play, as 17 of his last 19 have come from dead balls. It speaks to his limitations at this stage of his career. The goal and the victory was a statement. Gerrard should not have started on the bench on his 16h anniversary as a Liverpool player last Saturday. Gerrard need be rested from time to time. But it has to be done selectively. It made no sense for Gerrard to sit in a must-win game with tensions sky-high at Anfield. Gerrard may not be what he once was, but there is no proper replacement. Neither Lucas nor Joe Allen will suffice, they are average at best. If the reins are to be past from Gerrard, adequate talent to replace is a must. 12) After losing for the seventh time in nine matches and getting into a spat with a supporter, Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson declared post-match if fans cant recognize the team-effort, they should stay at home. The comment is an absolute no-no for any manager or player. The fans are the lifeblood that drive the club. Passion should not be curbed. Criticism is part of the gig and comes with the losses, especially for a team in last place. Pearson knows better. The pressure is on Pearson with a crucial away match with Aston Villa ahead. 13) Newcastles Papiss Cisse scored his fifth goal in a 1-1 draw with Burnley. The five goals are more than the four games hes started this season, and three more than he scored all of last year. 14) Southampton has received the headlines as surprise up-and-comer; West Ham United and Swansea City are every bit worthy of praise. They sit fifth and seventh respectively, on 24 and 22 points. Both teams are good enough to stay in the mix for Europa League spots. The Hammers defensive duo of Aaron Cresswell and Winston Reid are among the best at their positions. And the team continues to produce without top goal-scorer Diafra Sakho (back). Meanwhile, Wilfried Bony has scored in two of his last three for Swansea. And the balance between ball-cherishers in the middle and speed on the wings has proved a dangerous combination. Sundays game between these teams has the makings of most entertaining of the weekend. Gareth Wheeler can be reached at: @WheelerTSN gareth.wheeler@bellmedia.ca ' ' '

NEW ORLEANS -- Anthony Davis is getting even better while the New Orleans Pelicans close out another difficult season. Davis set career highs with 40 points and 21 rebounds, and Eric Gordon made two crucial free throws in overtime to lead the Pelicans to a 121-120 overtime victory over the Boston Celtics on Sunday night. "My teammates tell me that they feed off my energy and they want me to be great so I cant be timid and do what it takes to help my team win," said Davis, who also blocked three shots, making him the eight player in NBA history with at least 40 points, 20 rebounds and three blocks in a game. "Were trying to do a better job of making me comfortable down the stretch." Tyreke Evans added 26 points and Gordon had 19 for the Pelicans (27-39), who had lost two consecutive games. Gordons foul shots with 9.4 seconds remaining gave the Pelicans a 121-117 lead. "In overtime we did enough to squeak out a one-point win," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. Jeff Green, who led Boston with 39 points, answered Gordons free throws in overtime with a three-point play that trimmed New Orleans lead to 121-120 with 5.7 seconds remaining. But the Celtics were unable to foul on the inbounds play and New Orleans ran out the clock. "At least we played with better poise at the end of regulation and overtime," said Celtics coach Brad Stevens, who blamed a defensive miscommunication for Boston not committing the late foul. "We gave ourselves a chance to win on the offensive end. Guys got a couple of stops, just not enough at the end." Davis did not score in overtime but controlled the middle by grabbing six rebounds. He became the first player in franchise history to have at least 40 points and 20 rebounds in a game. He is averaging 32.3 points in his last six games. His previous high for points was Friday night when he scored 36 in a loss against Portland. Davis 21 rebounds erased his previous career high of 19 against Orlando on Jan. 26. "I think he can do this 10 to 15 times a year just because he is so gifted and does things for the right reason," Williams said. "Obviously, he has great athletic ability but some of that stuff is just him. We try to put him in a position where he can be a dominant player." Green made three big free throws late in regulation, tying it at 110. Davis answered with a jumper for New Orleans, but Kris Humphries, who scored 16 points, sent the game into overtime on a long jumper from the right corner. "Thats a tough one to swallow," said Celtics forward Jared Sullinger, who scored 14 points. "(Humphries) hitting that big shot to send it into overtime, we thought we could win. In the end we came up short." Avery Bradley had 12 points for the Celtics, who lost their fourth consecutive game. Evans layup with 5:33 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Pelicans a 102-89 lead. Boston then closed with a 23-10 surge to force the extra period. It was similar to the past two games when the Pelicans blew leads against Memphis and Portland. "We played defence in the fourth quarter and in overtime and got stops when we needed it," Davis said. "We came up with the rebounds and made free throws." The Celtics, who attempted to push the pace against the defence-minded Pelicans, closed the first half on a 17-8 run to take a 64-57 halftime lead. Boston scored 39 points in the second period. Green had 20 points at the break. He had a tying dunk with 4:11 left and a 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining, giving Boston a 54-49 lead. Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel entered treatment at a rehab facility on Monday. The following statement on the former Texas A&M star was released to the Cleveland Plain Dealer by publicist Denise Michaels. Brad Beckworth, friend and advisor to Manziel and his family, has confirmed that Johnny entered treatment on Wednesday. Johnny knows there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to be a better family member, friend and teammate and he thought the off-season was the right time to take this step. On behalf of Johnny and his family, were asking for privacy until he rejoins the team in Cleveland. Manziel, drafted 22nd overall in 2014, struggled in two starts with the Browns this season, completing 13 of 26 passes for 112 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. The 22-year-old was fined by the Browns in Week 17 for being late for treatment on the hamstring injury that placed him on injured reserve. According to ESPN, Manziel threw a party the previous night that led to multiple players facing punishment, including wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was suspended for the Week 17 contest. Some members of the U.S. Congress arent so sure. They say Russia isnt doing enough to assure that athletes will be protected at the Feb. 7-23 games, happening not far from an Islamic insurgency that Russias huge security apparatus has struggled for two decades to quell. Russia may run greater risks in towns outside the tightly controlled Olympic zone. Suicide bombs last month a few hundred kilometres (miles) away have increased concerns, and an Islamic warlord has urged his followers to attack the Sochi Olympics, Russian President Vladimir Putins pet project. Framber Valdez Jersey . Thaddeus Young scored seven of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, Evan Turner added 22 points, and the 76ers hung on for their first road win since Nov. 1, beating the depleted Los Angeles Lakers 111-104 on Sunday night. Wade Miley Jersey . Leave it to Matt Niskanen, the newly proclaimed Eddie Haskell of the Washington Capitals.Scott Cullen has some post-Olympic notes on Martin St. Louis trade rumours, Team Canada in 2018 as well as NHL Olympic participation in Pyeongchang, South Korea (and beyond). 1. The Internet was abuzz, following the Olympics, about the possibility of the Tampa Bay Lightning dealing leading scorer Martin St. Louis to New York for Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. This was my initital reaction. That isnt to say that the Lightning might not deal St. Louis because, if hes really unhappy after the whole Olympic team selection fiasco, then that might be the impetus for movement. However, the Lightning are in third place in the Eastern Conference, which means they arent just going to give him away, and there are several issues at play with regards to St. Louis future with the team. First, since St. Louis has a no-movement clause, the Lightning are at his mercy should they decide to trade him. If St. Louis says that his preferred destination is the Rangers, because he lives in nearby Connecticut, then you can expect the Rangers to avoid paying fair market value, instead paying closer to monopolistic value, not unlike the Pittsburgh Penguins offered to the Calgary Flames for Jarome Iginla last season. Additionally, if the Lightning are going to shop St. Louis, wouldnt it make much more sense to do it in the offseason, when they might be able to get a better quality return, or perhaps open the trade talks to more than one team (its not like Manhattan is the only NHL location relatively close to Connecticut)? Whatever the deal ends up being, there is little reason for the Lightning to deal St. Louis, straight-up, for an inferior winger with an expiring contract. Maybe Callahan plus works, but it would definitely depend on the plus. The reigning scoring champion cant just be peddled out of town at a cut-rate price if a franchise is going to be seen as legitimate. Considering how torn Lightning GM Steve Yzerman must have been throughout this process, its no wonder that hes had enough as Team Canada GM after back-to-back Olympic gold medals. 2. The 2014 Olympics were barely finished before Mike Johnson was tasked with projecting Team Canada for 2018. Obviously, this requires a lot of projection, going four years ahead of time, but here are some 2014 players that are likely due to be replaced because of age: Roberto Luongo, Mike Smith, Chris Kunitz, Patrick Sharp, Martin St. Louis, Jay Bouwmeester, Dan Hamhuis, Patrick Marleau, Rick Nash and Jeff Carter, all of whom are 29 or older this season. There could easily be more turnover, but filling those 8-10 spots seems a reasonable starting point. In net, I would add Jonathan Bernier (who I would have taken in 2014) to Carey Price. As the number three goaltender, I lean to a younger player like Braden Holtby, even if hes going through some tough times this season. On the blueline, with the right side staying the same -- Drew Doughty, Shea Weber, Alex Pietrangelo, P.K. Subban, along with Duncan Keith and Marc-Edouard Vlasic on the lefft -- that leaves room for a couple of new faces.dddddddddddd. Today, Ill go with Ryan Murray and Travis Hamonic ahead of Morgan Rielly and Brenden Dillon. Up front, after bringing back Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, John Tavares, Jamie Benn, Matt Duchene and Patrice Bergeron, I add Steven Stamkos, Tyler Seguin, Taylor Hall, Claude Giroux, Logan Couture and Nathan MacKinnon to get to 14 forwards. It pains me to pass over Blue Jackets C Ryan Johansen, but hes one that I find intriguing. The debate will surely rage, but maybe we can put it aside for at least three years before getting caught up in it too much. 3. One other twist, as it pertains to participation in the Olympics, and was mentioned by Gord Miller, is that the NHL could go with the under-23 model that soccer uses in the Summer Olympics. The sticking point, to me, in this plan is that teams arent going to want to continue playing their schedule without some of these top-calibre players. Here are some of the best 22-and-under players in the NHL this season. Can we really expect a team to go forward and play games for a couple of weeks without players of that calibre? Imagine the Colorado Avalanche without Ryan OReilly, Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog, or the Winnipeg Jets minus Evander Kane, Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba. Those would be devastating to those particular teams. The other tweak to the option is that NHL teams could decide which players can go which, given previous experience with the World Junior tournament, would pretty much eliminate the participation of NHL players, which begs the question: why impose an age limit at all if NHLers wont be participating? By most accounts, the players always seem in favour of the experience. Those that are playing enjoy it and those that dont enjoy getting some time off during the season. As it stands now, NHL owners and executives have taken the position that they arent so interested in participating in the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea and that could be their legitimate stance, especially after some teams had players suffer injuries while playing in Sochi. At the same time, its also the kind of position that a negotiator would take if they wanted to extract more favourable compensation from the International Olympic Committee. Theres no leverage if you state that youre unequivocally in love with the current relationship. Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs, who has hardly been regarded as being tight with the players, told the New York Times, "I know the importance of competing in the Olympics to many of our players — they are our partners and if it is important to them it should be important to us." That doesnt sound like the door on NHL Olympic participation has been shut altogether. At least not yet. "I had a tough first opponent who can play extremely good tennis," Sharapova said.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hey Kerry, Whats the standard for officiating on hits and shoves after the whistle? Andrei Markov laid a late hit on Ondrej Palat after the whistle in last nights Habs-Lightning game, while Radko Gudas was giving extra pushes and shoves after play was stopped as well! How much is too much? Carrie ---- Hi Kerry, I appreciate your candor in your columns. With the playoffs upon us I am going to put you on the spot. Does the league mandate that officials loosen the reins on the rules come playoffs? I have played, coached and been a fan of the game for many years and it would appear there is a different standard (I use Brad Marchand repeatedly punching one of the Sedins after a whistle with no call in the 2011 Stanley Cup final as Exhibit A). As a fan I hate the relaxed standard that is apparent in the playoffs. Andy,Toronto Hi Carrie and Andy: And so the games begin! We all know that game intensity is quickly ramped up in the playoffs. At ice level, a referee must be able to feel the energy that players exude from the opening puck drop and allow the game to unfold. Each game has a unique heartbeat and the officials need to constantly take the pulse into account and determine when it is appropriate to impose themselves. Im not talking about when to call a trip or other obvious infraction but more specifically how to regulate the temperature of a game. The refs need to tap into and differentiate between the positive energy (which they must allow to flourish) and any excessive negative energy (which they must take measures to control). Quite often there is a fine line between the two once we enter the high stakes of playoff competition. One incident can spike the game temp, such as the deliberate snow shower that Ryan Garbutt buried Ducks goalie Frederik Anderson with, or the late body check from Andrei Markov on Ondrej Palat. On the first play, the referee took immediate control by assessing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Garbutt, thereby sending a clear message that any "cheap" liberties on the goalkeeper would not be tolerated. I asked Marty Biron, whom I sat beside in the TSN studio last night, if a snow shower throws a goalie off his game. Marty said it actually does the opposite and will motivate the goalie to remain focused and play harder. Adding insult to injury, Matt Beleskey scored the fourth Ducks goal with Garbutt in the box. That became a costly penalty once Dallas closed the gap and Anaheim hung on for the 4-3 win. There was less need for the refs to exert control on the late Markov check. It was a clean shoulder check (other than after the whistle), it was in open ice as opposed to into the boards (in which case I am quite sure a penalty would have resulted) and even though it resulted in a scrum, the benefit of the doubt could be offered that Markov was in the act of finishing a check and the whistle was a little late.ddddddddddddIf after this "freebee" extended by the refs there was another episode of a testosterone rush someone should pay the price of a penalty call. Andy, there is no specific direction or league mandate given to the officials to loosen the reins on the rules. They are instructed to utilize their "best judgment" to ensure that marginal penalties are avoided at all times. This suggestion can plant a seed in the mind of the officials that isnt always positive. As the game moves closer to the end the refs feel an internal pressure to make sure that if they do raise their arm it will be judged as a "solid" penalty call. They want desperately to keep the spotlight off themselves. That thought process, when taken to excess, can negatively alter the standard that had been set throughout the game. Candidly speaking, a referee might avoid calling a foul that occurs 100 plus feet from the net since it doesnt involve a direct scoring opportunity. At that point he gambles and hopes that continued game flow gets him out of a self-perceived controversy. You and I know this is not the right approach, nor is it in the best interest of the game. Those in charge of rating the officials performance have a hand in this process as well. We have seen situations where a ref has stepped up and made a gutsy (and correct) call that impacts a game only to find himself dropped from further playoff assignments due to the nuclear fallout. Brad Marchand rag dolling Daniel Sedin in the 2011 Cup Final is just one example we could cite with regard to ref avoidance issues. Players will take full advantage when they feel the referee has put his whistle away. On the flip side, I recall Jerome Iginla chasing me around the ice after I whistled Andrew Ference for blasting Martin St. Louis into the end boards with less than two minutes remaining in Game 7 of the 2004 Cup Final with the Lightning leading by a score of 2-1. It was an obvious penalty but the score, time and emotion altered Iginlas perception and acceptance of the call. Then came the first lockout season and the "New NHL" spawned an attitude that penalties would be called regardless of the score and time. The standard has eroded somewhat from that strong initiative and needs to be restored before we move much farther through this playoff season. As I mentioned in a previous column, the referees need to demonstrate sound judgment and courage to make the perceived "tough" call. When the refs do make them they must be supported by the Officiating Department managers. That is the seed that needs to grow. ' ' '

South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - The top-10 ACC showdown at Purcell Pavilion lived up to its billing, and it was Notre Dame -- particularly Jerian Grant -- providing the big plays down the stretch to steal a signature win from Duke. Grant finished with 23 points, 12 assists and six rebounds as the eighth- ranked Fighting Irish survived a 77-73 nail-biter against the fourth- ranked Blue Devils. Duke led by 10 midway through the second half before the Irish rallied for their fourth comeback victory during a five-game winning streak. Grant was the catalyst, but Notre Dame (20-2, 8-1 ACC) had plenty of contributors. Pat Connaughton chipped in 13 points and 12 rebounds, Zach Auguste scored 14 points and Steve Vasturia drained a huge 3-pointer in crunch time. There was a slight letdown for Duke (17-3, 4-3) following the celebration of Mike Krzyzewskis 1,000th career victory over the weekend, as no one other than Jahlil Okafor made a field goal over the final 12-plus minutes. Okafor totaled 22 points and 17 rebounds but struggled at the foul line, making just 2-of-7 with two critical misses under three minutes remaining. Final Score: (12) Wichita State 58, Loyola-Chicago 47 Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred VanVleet dropped 27 points and 12th- ranked Wichita State remained unbeaten in conference play with a 58-47 win over Loyola-Chicago on Wednesday. VanVleet, who leads the MVC in assists and ranks just third on the Shockers in points, was thrust into more of a scoring role with the rest of his team struggling and he delivered, shooting 10-for-16 from the floor and 4-of-7 from distance en route to the highest point total of his career. Ron Baker overcame a slow start and chipped in 16 points -- 14 in the second half -- as Wichita State (19-2, 9-0 MVC) won its ninth straight game following a non-conference loss to George Washington. The win overshadowed a difficult week for the Shockers, as transfer guard Connor Frankamp was arrested over the weekend for suspicion of DUI. Frankamp, a Wichita native who began his career at Kansas, isnt eligible to play this season but had been practicing with the team. Loyola (13-8, 3-6) lost its fourth straight game. Three of those have been without point guard Milton Doyle, who has been battling an ankle injury. Devon Turk scored nine points to lead a balanced Ramblers attack. Final Score: (18) Northern Iowa 59, Southern Illinois 52 Carbondale, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Seth Tuttle and Paul Jesperson each scored 13 points in the 18th-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers 59-52 win over the Southern Illinois Salukis on Wednesday. Tuttle also had 10 rebounds and three steals for the Panthers (19-2, 8-1 MVC), who have won eight in a row. Nate Buss tallied 11 points. Northern Iowa shot 52.6 percent from the field, while holding Southern Illinois to 39.2 percent. Ibby Djimde ended with 10 points off the bench for the Salukis (9-13, 2-7), who have lost two straight. Deion Lavender and Jalen Pendleton had eight points apiece. Final Score: (24) Oklahoma 81, Texas Tech 36 Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Spangler scored 20 points and 24th- ranked Oklahoma snapped out of its recent funk with a vengeance, dominating Texas Tech on both ends en route to an 81-36 rout at the Noble Center. After dropping four of their last five games -- three to ranked opponents -- a matchup with the Big 12s last-place team was just what the Sooners needed. Oklahoma (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) shot 52.5 percent from the floor, held the Red Raiders to an 11-of-52 field goal rate and scored 20 straight points at one stage to get back on track. Buddy Hield chipped in 15 points with seven rebounds for the Sooners, with Isaiah Cousins adding 13 points in the easy win. Texas Tech (11-10, 1-7), coming off Saturdays upset of then-No. 9 Iowa State, didnt have a player score in double figures. Robert Turner and Stan Mays paced the Red Raiders with eight points each. He signed with Colorado three days later but never made it to the majors with the Rockies. New York purchased his contract July 24, and he replaced Chase Whitley in the rotation.Capuano was 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA in 12 starts for the Yankees, who set a team record by using 33 pitchers this year. New York seems unwilling to consider Max Scherzer, who likely will be the priciest pitcher on the free-agent market. Were open to pursuing opportunities that I would call legitimate opportunities that present themselves, Cashman said. I feel better today about our overall situation than I did in October, and I feel weve really addressed a lot of areas of need. But Im still open-minded to continuing to pursue and consider any legitimate opportunities that present themselves.Young, a backup outfielder, agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract. DAVIE, Fla. - Loosening up for their first training camp practice, the Miami Dolphins high-stepped sideways up and down the field while House of Pains song "Jump Around" blared on the loudspeakers. Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes took in the scene and allowed himself a long yawn. With the first game more than six weeks away, the Dolphins tempered their excitement Friday regarding the 2014 season. Even so, every team is undefeated and optimistic in July, and the Dolphins were no different as they opened camp. "We want to play deep into January and February," quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. "Our goal is to win the division and play in the playoffs. Anything less than that is not up to our standards." Actually, thats way above the Dolphins recent standards. They havent made the playoffs since 2008, which is also their most recent winning season. They needed to win only one of their final two games last season but lost both by a combined score of 39-7 to finish 8-8. Tannehill and coach Joe Philbin are back for their third season with the team, but a woeful offensive line has been overhauled, theres more depth at receiver and running back, and the defence has the potential to be excellent. "We want to win. Thats what were all here for," new general manager Dennis Hickey said. "Were really excited about this team and what theyre going to be able to accomplish." Some prognosticators rank the Dolphins among the NFLs worst teams, but owner Stephen Ross anticipates post-season play. "I dont think I start any season without wanting to make the playoffs," Ross said. "If you dont have those expectations, you shouldnt be in the game. You own a team because you want to create a winner." On a 90-degree day, Philbin was already on the hot seat, and Ross was asked if the coach must make the playoffs to keep his job. "Im not going to say here he has to, because I can understand what the headlines would be," Ross said. "I like Joe Philbin very much. Im expecting Joe Philbin to be here a long time. But every year you want to see improvement." The Dolphins desperately need a better locker-room culture after a troubled relationship between offensive linemen Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin led to a bullying scandal that sent the franchise reeling. Incognito and Martin are gone, and the Dolphins brought in outside consultants for training sessions with players to foster better leadership. Centre Mike Pouncey, implicated in the scandal, said the culture will be much healthier this season. "Coach Philbin and Mr. Ross have done a bunch of things to change that," Pouncey said. "Right now were heading in the right direction. Everyone has bought into the way we want it done around here." As anticipated, Pouncey (hip) and running back Knowshon Moreno (knee) began camp on the physically unable to perform list. Both worked on the side Friday, and while Pouncey is expected to miss at least a couple of games, he said hes ahead of schedule in his recovery. Moreno, who signed a $3.275 million, one-year contract after a breakout season with Denver last year, is expected to join practice sometime during camp. Every other player passed his conditioning test. Defensive end Dion Jordan practiced and will be allowed to play in exhibition games, even though he has been suspended for the first four games of the season after testing positive for a stimulant prohibited by the NFL. Receiver Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson were back on the field after recovering from knee injuries last season. Koa Misi remained at middle linebacker after moving there from the outside as an off-season experiment deemed successful. The first practice was predictably sloppy. With Pouncey out, quarterback Ryan Tannehill dropped at least three snaps. He misfired deep to Mike Wallace — a frequent occurrence last year — the first time he threw long, but they later connected on a 40-yard throw that brought a cheer from spectators. While the stands were only half full, season-ticket sales are up, and the first three home games are projected to be sellouts. "Miami wants to support a winner," Ross said. "We start winning, well have a lot more support, and there will be a lot more enthusiasm." ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL Air Max Tn Pas Cher Chine .Fiji striker Roy Krishna scored in the 14th minute to give Wellington its fourth win, along with a draw, from its past five matches, putting the Phoenix fourth but only a point behind third-placed Adelaide.
